I have a serious hate-on for pigeons. When two of them decided that our balcony would make a perfect home, I tried shooing them but it was pointless as they'd only fly back when I wasn't waving my arms frantically yelling cuss words at them. The only thing that worked was using a super-soaker (thank you Craigslist). It saved my balcony. So I wasn't too keen about reading a book about pigeons, however, through reading I did find out some pretty interesting pigeon facts, including how they are a very egalitarian species in that both the male and female pigeons nurture and feed their young (& and they even create their own "milk" through their "crop" found in their throats). They also shit in their nests. Pigeons, they can't have it all. Most of the interviewees are seen as a bit off (the story of Doctor Pigeon was my favorite) and loopy so you might think that it only fuels the fire of pigeon hate, however, there it's written with heart & empathy so you want to hear more about these fancy pigeon breeders, the obsessive racers and the pigeon activists. Highly readable and I debated giving this 4 stars. Let's just pretend there's a 3.5 rating system at work.
