I fell in love with their relationship but it was quite slow in the first half of the book.

I read this book in three phases. The first, was noted by a slow pace waiting to get hooked. The second, I began to see why my friend recommended me this book. The third phase I was desperate to keep reading. What starts as a bleak tale of tragedy involving a schizophrenic psych patient  turns into a wonderful, magical-realism tale of what it means to live.

This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I'm not much for love stories, I find them all a bit schmaltzy, but this was beyond a love story. It was epic, the characters were fantastic, especially Marianne Engel, and the protagonist was an anti-hero of sorts. The author did everything to make you dislike him but he still found a way into your heart. I recommend this above every other book I have ever read. It's incredible, out of this world and will keep you hooked right through to the end.

As usual, I never know how to start my book reviews.
I usually write them the second after I put the book down, so my head is still spinning from the awesomeness.
First I must point out that the narrator never tells us his name. I just think it's worth mentioning.
Well, it took me a month and a half to finish, longer than any other book. I thought that I would consider it time wasted, but it really wasn't. Each tiny chapter is full of incredible details, more than enough to satisfy my need. So I really just needed to read a chapter a day, and that was enough.
Anyway, I have to say I disliked the ending a little bit. It caught me off-guard and caused me to doubt the whole book for a while. It was mostly because everything just seemed too fictional for me to handle. But by the time I got to the final page, I was convinced again that although I'm still a bit confused about what happened in the story, it was worth the read.
I would have given it 5 stars, but I just expected a bit more of it. Not only did it confuse me at one point, but it would have had a stronger effect if their love for each other was better portrayed. The author never directly shows you their love; it's like a given.
This book also opened my eyes to many concepts that I've never given thought to before. I have to mention this again: the detail was so exquisite. It super-charged my imagination, and I lost myself in the book. I wouldn't be just sitting on my bed anymore; I would be falling, burning, drowning, freezing, sweating...
I felt every little thing that the author was trying to portray in his words like I was there.
Come to think of it, this book was really amazing. It took me on a ride I otherwise never would have been able to imagine.
Reading it has left me exhausted, but the good kind, the kind of exhaustion you feel after a day at the beach. It's just left me satisfied, basically.
Now I can't bring myself to pick up another book because I'm till soaking in The Gargoyle's intensity.
It's a story I'll carry around with me everywhere. I can't start reading my next book because I wouldn't be able to concentrate long enough. My mind will still be consumed by the pictures this book has painted on it.
It teaches you to keep an open mind. And it also makes you fall in love with literature.

The Gargoyle is up there in my top 10. I found it emotional, deep and inspiring. I loved the writing and the story behind the characters. The idea of overcoming hardship in life is one that I think most people struggle with so to read something that displays that so eloquently and with such empathy was, in all honesty, heart warming. 

Amazing writing style, but I think the people around đe just hyped it too much do I had bigger expectations.

Quite long to start, with its strange setup (main narrator is in the present days, while the second one tells story from the past that seems unlinked), but I really enjoyed it.
