Forse di smettere di scrivere, ma la sua non è la crisi che affligge gli scrittori senza ispirazione. Jasper Gwyn sembra voler cambiare prospettiva, arrivare al nocciolo di una magia. Gli fa da spalla, da complice, da assistente una ragazza che raccoglie, con rabbiosa devozione, quello che progressivamente diventa il mistero di Mr Gwyn. Alessandro Baricco entra nelle simmetrie segrete di questo mistero con il passo sicuro e sciolto di chi sa e ama i sentieri che percorre. Muove due formidabili personaggi che a metà romanzo si passano il testimone, e se a Mr Gwyn tocca mischiare le carte del mistero, la ragazza ha il compito di ricomporne la sequenza per arrivare a una ardita e luminosa evidenza.

A me il Baricco piace sperimentatore. Pazienza se ai piú vien da storcere il naso perché ne intravedono furbizia e compiacenza. 
La mia domanda senza risposta – almeno per il momento – é: sta provando a vendersi con una scrittura smussata o quello che l’ha preceduto era solo un episodio‘’giovanile’’?
Comunque é un bel libro. Almeno per le immagini che dá, lí non si smentisce per nulla.
Quello che lascia intravedere ha un che di hipster. Forse per tutta questa decadenza e normalitá di scenari e oggetti quotidiani. Perché poi analogico lo é sempre stato nei racconti.
Ma non mi ha dato fastidio. Pur non definendomi tale, tutto ció che viene tacciato per hipster credo che abbia una bella estetica.

Singolare, ti catapulta in un mondo che non saprei descrivere. Non perché è un mondo fantasy o paradossale, ma l'eccellente scrittura di Baricco ti fa immergere totalmente nel romanzo e quando riemergi ne resti spaesato.

Romancier britannique dans la fleur de l'âge, Jasper Gwyn a à son actif trois romans qui lui ont valu un honnête succès public et critique. Pourtant, il publie dans The Guardian un article dans lequel il dresse la liste des cinquante-deux choses qu'il ne fera plus, la dernière étant : écrire un roman. Son agent, Tom Bruce Shepperd, prend cette déclaration pour une provocation, mais, lorsqu'il appelle l'écrivain, il comprend que ça n'en est pas une : Gwyn est tout à fait déterminé. Simplement, il ne sait pas ce qu'il va faire ensuite. Au terme d'une année sabbatique, il a trouvé : il veut réaliser des portraits, à la façon d'un peintre, mais des portraits écrits qui ne soient pas de banales descriptions. This book had a good start but let me down until finishing with a really disappointing ending.

What I DID like: the writting style, I find it poetic and easy to read. I also liked the novel 'Silk' by the same author. 

However, I DID NOT like any of the portagonists in this book and found them under-developped. We know only very little about their past and didn't get any significant personal growth. 

In my opinion, Jasper Gwyn is weak and either a good troll or lying to himself. The premise of the book state that he will never write anything again. BUT the whole book is about him writing protrait and at the end we learn that he is still writing under two fake author names (at least). The plot of the book didn't deliver for me.

The only thing I remember about Rebecca is that she is fat and lacks of self-esteem. Having her portrait made did not bring any development to her character, her life choices still feel underwhelming. 

If this book had not been a christmas gift I would have probably DNF it.
