Frankly, I don't think Anne McCaffrey has ever owned a cat based on how she described it. The book was mostly unremarkable. Many of the characters were simple and had no true motivations in the story. It's a very simple good versus evil plot line. The cat, while being the main title's focus, was not apparent in many of the chapters. It's a highly simplified Game of Thrones, if that makes sense.

Ultimately, I would recommend you find a different medieval intrigue book if you can.
