Sometimes you get novels that focus on characters and relationships and sometimes you get novels that can use the word "asperity" correctly and confidently. I think we should have a balance of both.

I do think I have it in me to like this more - it's seminal to the genre, it has interesting world-building and feels like it pays homage to some of the knight romances. But some of the misogyny made me flinch (I know - a product of its time) and font setting, of all things, made it a nightmare to read and difficult to focus on. I also wish it had given a little bit more attention to developing its characters, alongside the politics of the world.

I have committed now, though, and I enjoyed it enough to know I will read the next one.

First time I read it was on the bus to Girl Scout camp.

The culture represented in the book is deeply misogynistic and I’m just not here for more of that.
