I liked this better than the first book in the series. The main characters are still not that great though - I wouldn’t have wanted a third book about Reuben & Laura. What shines in this book are the descriptions of the house and Christmas party, but I didn’t really find myself interested in the werewolf parts of the story.

Anne Rice has gone from vampires, to Jesus, and now to werewolves, or Man Wolves. In her sequel to The Wolf Gift, she continues the story at Nideck Point at Christmas time. Reuben, Stuart, Laura, Felix and the rest of the 'distingushed gentlemen ' Morphenkinder are preparing for a huge Yuletide celebration at the mansion and in town also. However, the arrival of new Morphenkinder put a twist onto the celebration. There is also a reveal about the Forest Gentry and other new developments in Reuben's life.

While The Wolf Gift was all about Reuben's physical transformation and coping with his new form and abilities, The Wolves of Midwinter is more of about his philosophical changes and adjustments. Rice does bring some very interesting questions to the forefront. 

Not near as action packed as the first book, Rice attempts to answer some questions about how to live as a Man Wolf and the responsibilities that lay with it. It is a much different read than the first book because you are busy pondering the questions raised and how you might possibly handle them. Don't pick up this book expecting an adventure novel with werewolves.
