I couldn't do it. I made it about halfway. This book is so unnecessarily long. The descriptions are overly gratuitous. I found I was skimming over parts of the story, losing them within pages and pages of scene descriptions and conversations that had little to nothing to do with the book. So with that, on to the next book. ALSO, what's up with all the incest and pedophilia in this?

The rich, darkly twisting and fetid tale of the Mayfair Witches much reflects the mysterious depths of the Garden District of New Orleans in which it is set. This family is followed over centuries (and many pages), cursed or blessed depending on your persuasion, until we reach their final purpose. One amongst them saw this coming a very long time. Best read over coffee and beignets, don’t lose your head in this legacy.

I’ve read this when I was young for three days only to read my eyes when I get tired and go back to the book. To be young and read 900+ pages of book in just one weekend is something that I don’t have any energy for. So decided to listen to it instead, and now it took me 6 months. Love revisiting all the story in the family tree. As always, there are some long winded text as expected of Anne arrive but enjoyed it still.

This book is okay, but I would have liked it much more if I'd read it during my Anne Rice phase at age 15 circa 2002.

This is truly a magnificent book. There is so much happening in its many many pages. While it is absolutelyba slow burn, it is a very well done one. It hooks you in and keeps you there. While a large portion of this story is told through a historical manner concerning the Mayfair family, it did not detract from this story but lent so much more to it. Truly a great read and absolutely worth every single word!

Review of the entire series
I really wanted to stop reading as the relationships were too disturbing to me. But I just needed to know what came next. Finally spent weeks engaged in this story, but I just couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Delicious. Can't wait to go to New Orleans next week now.

One of my all-time favorites. History, witchcraft, sensuality, and mystery all in one. The rest of the series didn't grasp me as much as this first book.
