This has been on my to be read pile for a long time so I’m glad to finally tick it off. Bad Dirt is a collection of short stories focused on the Wyoming landscape and those who survive within its bounds. 

I did enjoy the stories but I didn’t connect with them as much as I did in her previous collection. There is no doubt in my mind that Annie Proulx is the epitome of rural noir and an amazing short story writer. I think on this occasion it was the case of content. While her previous collection focused more on the people of Wyoming this collection tended to go with longer stories with a greater focus on the land itself. It probably doesn’t help that Brokeback Mountain is one of my favorite short stories ever written and this collection doesn’t have a story that come close for me.
