This is the third book in this series about the author, Anthony Horowitz, writing about himself as a second-rate author (he’s not!) finishing the second book about the great former detective Hawthorne solving murders whilst accompanying him to a literary event to promote their first book. Yes, it’s all a bit meta. His self-deprecating narrative is charming - always two steps behind Hawthorne and so pleased when he figures something out, even if Hawthorne got there first. Just as I am so pleased to realize this is (obviously now) a modern Sherlock Holmes series with Horowitz cast as the foil to Hawthorne’s brilliance. While he may not come close to the puzzles and wordplay of the first, these are quite enjoyable whodunnits.
