enjoyed this a lot more than i thought i would when i started the book. a very stately-feeling book but very witty and becomes progressively looser. felt like a much more uptight version of the hazy hangout stories of Richard Linklater’s films or something. really looking forward to the next book in this sequence now.

I didn't expect a lot to happen in this book, considering that Question of Upbringing is just the first part of a 12-volume magnum opus by Powell, but I was hoping a little more of storyline developed than what was offered. Essentially this is a series of events as described by a young man, like his years at school or a French boarding house, and I'm not entirely sure why I'm supposed to care about them. Obviously one must tread a little further to see the bigger picture. Otherwise, I found Powell's prose enticing, with some masterfully crafted sentences. Occasionally a turn of phrase or a metaphor would catch me unaware, and I would have to read it once more to fully appreciate its genius. There is some great subtle humour sprinkled throughout, and I especially enjoyed every scene that starred Le Bas - the dreaded, yet comical housemaster.
