Whereas I would avert my eyes almost immediately, fearing to intrude. Or maybe it was the opposite kind of fear, that the person or persons scrutinized would guess how anxious I was to invade their privacy, figure out who they were, turn inside out the mnystery of who they might be, fear that I would be exposed as an inveterate voyeur, albeit a timorous one. Maybe I am being too harsh on myself. I have always gone out of my way, in fact, to respect the autonomy of my fellow humans. Gone too far, maybe.

beautiful book. At some point I concluded that I'd enjoy it more if I started reading it as pure memoir rather than fiction, even though the content is inverted from that. Ariel waxes poetic often, the scenery, subject matter, and settings meander, and monologues run very long. Dialogue doesn't feel realistic. 

But it's all very beautiful – placing the deepest and most eternal interior and external questions directly in the ring with each other. A singular project done admirably well. We should all be so encouraged to probe our own histories, and the histories that we're immersed in (including the future), with this much depth and grace.
