Ho apprezzato il fatto che mi abbia descritto un mondo di cui sapevo ben poco, ma che mi aveva sempre affascinato. Ha avuto una funzione didascalica abbastanza soddisfacente, resa molto più leggera e piacevole da una trama romanzata. Peccato per tutto il resto... Quando la trama focalizzava solo sui suoi personaggi e gli eventuali intrecci (e quindi spariva tutto il "retroscena"), mi appariva improvvisamente sterile, inutile. A volte perfino poco credibile. Lo stile di scrittura è fintamente "naturalistico".
Before picking this book back up there was a moment in my every day life where I was doing the dishes and, for some weird reason, I just stopped and thought about the moment Chiyo/Sayuri realises that she will never see her sister again and I was just... crushed. The first time I read this book was in the spring of 2013, four times (and many years) later it's the end of 2020 and the emotional impact it has on me is unchanged. Memoirs of a Geisha surpasses five stars so easily it feels insulting that I can't give it more, and despite the awful controversy that surrounds it, it will never stop being my favourite book of all time.
