I have developed a lot of respect for Gawande in the past year. Love his interdisciplinary tendencies & writing style.

An outstanding book, which I ended up picking at a great time. This will stick.

If you're looking for a how-to guide, this is not it (with the exception of Chapter 6).

It's about the need for checklists and a culture of teamwork in a technologically complex world. He draws heavily from the practices and examples of airline pilots, which he applies mostly to surgery. There is a brief discussion of government application (natural disasters) and investing as well.

As a professional list maker, I did not need convinced of the effectiveness of checklists, so I didn't get a whole lot from this book. I think the most interesting thing was considering the (American?) ideal of an independent hero who knows all and gets it done on his own, vs the real world necessity of a team working in unison.

I hope things have changed in the 8 years since he wrote this book, but this would still be a recommended read for those in the medical field.

It was just a first read, but I felt underwhelmed. I had already bought the premise when I bought it: “checklists can be awesome”. Unfortunately, I was left with impression that the whole book was a series of cases to argue why checklists are important, and I didn’t find what I was looking for: guidance to create my own awesome checklists. I might have missed it in the hear through.

I ordered this for my Kindle assuming it was some kind of 'self-help' organisational tool that would turn me into a productivity wizard. The fact I was totally wrong was in no way a disappointment. I found this a riveting read. Gawande writes with real vigour, mixing anecdote with cold hard statistical fact and marshalling what becomes an incredibly strong and urgent argument. It's astounding that something as simple as a checklist has the power to increase surgical (and no doubt standard procedural) outcomes with very little cost, and bewildering that such an evidence-driven industry such as medicine would be resistant to something which promises great improvements with very little cost. This should be required reading for all NHS managers.

One big idea: make simple checklists for important, but easy to forget processes. It'll reduce your errors, and free up your brain to think about the harder parts of the problems you're solving.

I'd have rated it higher if there were more guidance on how much is "enough" in writing a good checklist, or if it were even shorter. Gawande goes back and forth between medicine and aviation in his examples, and he could perhaps consolidate the narratives a bit better.

I learned a lot from this book, just a clear manifest to how checklists help simplify the most complex of tasks.  I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get things done.

It's not a bad book... but it's not a good book. I rarely come across books where I think 'Watching the 30 min presentation on this would have been enough' or 'Looking for a book summary would have sufficed', but I found myself thinking this over and over. 

Read it line by line up to 40%, skimmed all the way to 60% and skipped the last few chapters. I did read the last one, which was just a few more paragraphs on how great checklists are, except for when they're not. But they're mostly great and everyone in every industry should use them.

This is one of those books that feels like it should've been one long-ish article. It spends the first few chapters on the concept of the checklist, then the remaining 70% on stories as to why the checklist is great. Don't get me wrong, the concept is good and some of the stories are quite memorable, but ultimately it felt like a bit of a chore to get through the book.

Short, simple, useful. Makes it clear that basically everyone would benefit from adding this simple process to their work, provides multiple examples of where it is useful (aviation, medicine, and finance), along with guidance on how to do it well. Also makes it clear how completely broken medicine is, given how successful this is but how rarely used it is.

Dr. Atul Gawande explores the error-prone nature that is an inevitable side effect of being human. At times this can simply be due to forgetting because of the many moving parts that are involved in any given job. He explores how the simple creation of a checklist is extremely effective in reducing mortality in operating rooms, as well as ensuring success and minimizing errors in many other work arenas. 

Overall a great read. It was a bit dull at times; however, incredibly informative nevertheless.
