In the Weeds

B.K. Borison2021
"Evelyn St. James isn't the kind of woman you forget. Beckett Porter certainly hasn't. One incredible weekend in Maine, and he’s officially a man distracted. He’s not unfamiliar with hot and heavy flings. He knows how it goes. But Evie wove some sort of magic over him during their tumble in the sheets. He can’t stop thinking about her laugh. Her hand pressed flat against his chest. Her smiling mouth at his neck. Also, her eyes. And her legs. So when she suddenly appears on his farm as part of a social media contest, he is ... confused. He had no idea that the sweet and sexy woman he met at a bar is actually a global phenomenon: social media influencer Evelyn St. James. When she disappears again, Beckett resolves to finally forget her and move on. But Evelyn St. James has a problem. Feeling disconnected from her work and increasingly unhappy, she’s trying to find her way back to something real. She returns to the last place she was happy, Lovelight Farms and the tiny town of Inglewild. It has absolutely nothing to do with the hot farmer she spent two incredible nights with. Nothing at all. In The Weeds is a sweet and steamy second-chance romance about finding your happiness. It features a grumpy farmer, a no-nonsense social media influencer, a small town of busybodies, and four very cute kittens.

A simple and sweet love story. The characters in this one were more fleshed out and better developed, so imo it was better than the first.

I loved Lovelight and even at the start of this was so into the premise (I love a second chance ONS) and the quality of writing. Still a fan of BK’s slight whimsy with her characters’ thoughts and feelings.

But

2 things that I really irked me: Beckett is a cinnamon roll, soft and sensitive all wrapped up in a masculine farmer bod, basically a perfect man. But I got such the ick when he randomly has a moment of high school level aggression towards his sister’s ex. She had an on again off again relationship with a guy who is relatively unkind, non-abusive. Beckett decides to possibly go beat him up?? Can we live on the opposite side of toxic masculinity where Beckett remains in character and talks to his sister instead of threatening and blaming someone else for her choices?

Secondly, the racial ambiguity of Evelyn was pretty off putting and I recommend reading BIPOC reviewers take on this over mine (white woman here). I didn’t even realize Evelyn was supposed to be BIPOC until halfway through and realized her initially described “tanned” skin is self described as brown and there is a single sentence reference on how she couldn’t get a job in TV due to racism. Everyone else in this town gets their whole life story and family tree but it’s like Evie fell out of a coconut tree and I just don’t think that’s fair to her. I could go on but again, other reviewers have said it better.

This series is so adorable. I really enjoyed Lovelight Farms and In The Weeds is right up there with it. I won’t lie the miscommunication trope isn’t my favorite trope but this is a better book that had it. I really love Beckett and Evie and the will they or won’t they back and forth they had. I do think it could have drawn out a bit of figuring out there feelings for one another. I think it was known so quickly that some of it felt drawn out. Honorable mention was starting this book with a town meeting of such in the first chapters while watching Gilmore Girls was honestly my favorite part of the book because Beckett gives so many Luke Danes vibes.

This was such a wonderful sequel to the Lovelight Farms series. I absolutely loved Beckett in the first book, but being able to actually learn more about him and how he thinks was so great. I fell more in love with his character because of it. I also appreciated that this book was Dual POV. Often, romance books in a series stick with a similar POV throughout, and since the first one was from only from the woman’s POV, I was worried about losing out on Beckett’s thoughts. I was very happy that was NOT the case. I also fell in love with Evelyn. She was very relatable. Her search for happy in a world that is inundated by social media and the internet is something I think everyone can connect to. This book even made me want to take stock of my life and look for “my happy”. It’s rare that a romance book does that for me. While, of course, this book had more than just romance, ooooh man, was the romance good. They both were so sweet with each other and had such good chemistry, it was hard not to shout “just get together already!!”. There is something really addictive about the way this author writes. I’m not sure what it is but it just screams comfort and wholesome. I really can’t recommend this book (and series) enough. I will 100% being reading the next installment.

Internet sensation, Evelyn St. James, should be happy but isn't, so she decides to take a break from her job and go back to the last place she remembers being happy, with Beckett Porter on Lovelight Farms. When the town of Inglewild conspires to bring Evie and Beckett back together, neither one seems too upset to be living together, even if it is temporary. Evie spends her days enjoying the little town and feeling better about herself, while Beckett dreads the moment when he knows she will leave and go back to her real life. Evie begins to realize though, that the happiness that she seeks may have been waiting in Inglewild all along.

In the Weeds is a cute story about two characters who are stuck in a moment in time and can't seem to move on. Beckett suffers from social anxiety and an extreme desire to help others, making it easy to classify him as a cinnamon roll hero. Evie is less likable due to some of her choices and a lack of self-awareness. Their relationship is very low key with some miscommunication and a slow burn romance, while the plot is a little thin and hard to follow in the beginning, especially if the previous book in the series, Lovelight Farms, isn't read first. Overall, however, In the Weeds is a light, entertaining romance that would make for an ideal summer read.

I loved the previous book in this series, so I had high hopes for this one. It was even better than I imagined. I loved being back at the farm in this small town full of meddling neighbors. But my favorite thing about this was Evie and Beckett. Their relationship was chefs kiss. I adored them together. Beckett is so smitten with Evie from the jump, and we love to see it. The chemistry between them was palpable, but there was also such tenderness. They cared so deeply for each other, and it was sweet watching them do little things for one another. Seeing Evie carrying earplugs for when Beckett gets too anxious especially tugged at my heartstrings. I'm not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope, but Borison did it in a way that felt right to the characters, so I didn't mind it as much. I can tell that Borison will be a new fave, and I can't wait to pick up the next book.

God this fictional town is perfect in every way. I truly adore Beckett as a human being, I love this opposites attract novel and how patient they were with each other, except for that one part lmao. I loved getting to know Beckett more than just grunts and his loving crazy family. I truly wish we had a bit more of the Stella/Beckett/Layla friendship but otherwise this one was pretty great. I’m SUPER excited to get to know nova in book four😍

PS remember to find your happy every day ❤️

I loved this story!! Such a feel good romance for those that followed Stella & Luka's love story. I felt like this story could only go up from the start for Beckett & Evelyn. But as a great love story, it faces challenges... There are a few things I'm not a fan of in this book, one being miscommunication trope, and the other just feeling rushed towards the ending. The little things didn't bother me nearly as much! I really loved Evelyn's development and Beckett's back story. It was nice to see read a happy story yet I craved the banter or heartache as I expect for two extreme different personalities. Overall though, I really love this story. And P.S. Beckett definitely gives tattooed mountain man a good name in the spicy scenes!

3.75-4 Stars This series really does feel like a hug in book form you've got a charming small town, beautiful relationships, and lovable characters. Even though I didn't go crazy over it as I did with reading Lovelight Farms, which I completely devoured and couldn't put down! There is something really nice about reading this series, it has almost a quiet intimacy and doesn't try to be anything other than an enjoyable small-town romance and sometimes that's all a book needs. Really if someone is looking for a simple low angst romance that is just a feel good vibes look no further! We got a very small glimpse back in book 1 about Evie and Beckett's past hook up and I think it was very obvious that their story was unfinished. This book despite starting with their hook up was a really slow burn and a lot of it is spent with them sort of avoiding but enviably bumping into each other fairly often while Evie is staying in the small town. So glad I got to know their characters and experience their romance. Also, Beckett being unable to not adopt stray animals and now being both a proud kitty and duckling parent was too precious (I guarantee if we catch up with them in a couple years his home will be filled with even more pets LOL). His care for Evie and his animals was beyond sweet and I loved how he was a total sweetheart who went out of his way for those he loves.

In The Weeds B.K. Borison ★★★★★ 🧠 pages: 410 (ku) 🫀 genre: adult rom + contemp 🫁 pace: medium/fast (+ longer side) 🐥 pov: alternating — Evie's/Becketts (dual) This book is SO adorable that I want to ✨puke from absolute cuteness;✨ wow I just ✨loved✨ 'In The Weeds.’ Being a romantic enthusiast, I was excited to see more of the sensual and pure romance of Evie and Beckett's relationship. It all began with a seemingly heartwarming miscommunication, yet it wasn't. 🥹 It was more of a realistic depiction of someone leaving after a one-(two) night stand without saying goodbye and catching feelings without realizing it, thus making the term "leaving" significant. Alongside, Beckett and Evie each experience their own struggles, which results in a deeper appreciation for them as a unit and as individuals. 💘✨ "You haven’t even seen the best part yet.” “I’ve already seen your dick, Beckett.” The two protagonists were a pleasure; Beckett's PTSD with loud noise is something I relate to intensely, so seeing that part of social anxiety was uplifting. Evie was so profound and expansive, I was able to relate to her struggles — she was grappling with the adult perplexity of when a job becomes and feels like a "job.” When something you love no longer feels fulfilling to you. 😭😩 Although she was a social media influencer, this story dealt with nothing about it. There was no mention of followers or any version of social media, and I liked that. It focused on Beckett and his impeccable manners such as when he uses "honey." (✨IT IS SO CUTE.✨) 🥰😩 The sex scenes were my ✨FAVORITE✨; the balance between Evie's aggressiveness and Beckett's teasing sensuality is very much my life. I adore grumpy ✨yet✨ sensitive Beckett. 😌 This was my first ‘farm romance’ and I really like the flannel, rugged, bearded life; especially when it is interracial. This romance gave me more butterflies and made me smile more than any other romance; it was fun, heartwarming, and very rewarding. 😍

It took me longer to read than I would have liked because of the holiday craziness. Rather than that, I adored this book. It was a delight from start to finish, and I loved the character types. I was so sad to finish it, but I’ll be rereading it at some point for sure.

🌷 In the Weeds picks up 3 months after Lovelight Farms ended and is another sweet & spicy romantic comedy set in the Stars Hollow-esque town of Inglewood. Featuring a hot tattooed farm boy with social anxiety & misophonia (the earplugs!!) and a jaded social media influencer (relatable, am I right?), In the Weeds is about the bravery required to look for your happy and ASK for what you really want. Also, there’s a “we must snuggle for body heat” scene :) .

Slightly spicer than Lovelight Farms, just in the number of scenes.

The small town, second chance, grumpy-sunshine romance I never knew I needed!!!

There are no words to describe how much I loved Beckett Porter, he has absolutely stolen my heart! If I had kitten for every time this man made my heart sigh…well that wouldn’t be good for anyone, but I digress.

I wasn’t sure that BK Borison would be able to top Luca & Stella’s love story, but I absolutely adored Beckett & Evie’s journey. It was 100%, the sweetest love story I have read this year. It really conveyed the beauty of the simple things in life and how “finding your happy” isn’t as important as being “…open to it. You can trust yourself enough to feel it when you stumble upon it”.

I think my favorite thing about Beckett & Evie’s story is that it can happen to anyone. Finding happiness in the simple moments you share together and the simple acts of love.

•Beckett I love you so so much
•Eve my bff
•I want a book of all Beckett's sisters PLEASE

•layla my sweet beautiful clueless baker CAN'T WAIT TO READ HER STORY

THE WAY I GOT TWO POV (BEST SURPRISE EVER) WITH BECKEVIE BUT WITH LUKELLA NOT ¿? I'M STILL IN PAIN DON'T MIND ME

🏹Stella breathes out a sigh and a grin pulls her mouth wide. An answering smile blooms on Luka’s face the second he finds her in the crowd. Watching them together is like shoving a cupcake directly into my face

MY BABIES LUKELLA !!!

🏹 Deputy Caleb Alvarez standing just behind the Sheriff, a smile twitching on his lips, his gaze fixed on Layla.
I catch Stella’s eye and she grins

LAYLA’S STORY ON THE WAY

🏹 a small smile curls at the edge of his mouth, right at the corner. It tugs at his bottom lip as he shifts in his seat and I remember, viscerally, what that smile feels like tucked in the place between my shoulder and neck. He looks up at me through his lashes and it's the moment after a storm when the sun decides to peek out from behind the heavy clouds—rain still dripping from the edges of the roof, the trees, the mailbox on the corner.

🏹Naturally, my brain has already started making plans. We have some chicken wire in the greenhouse. I could loop it around the edges of the kitchen. Make a fence.
I sigh as I watch the little guy doze in the safety of my hands. I can’t adopt another animal. I don’t know the first thing about ducks.
You didn’t know the first thing about cats, either. That didn’t stop you.

Beckett+cats = 💗
Beckett+baby ducks= 💘

🏹 Nova has been talking to Stella’s brother, Charlie, about a tattoo of a scorpion on his ass.
I level a glare at her. “Why are you texting Charlie about his ass?”
Nova shrugs, unbothered. “I’m not. He’s texting me about his ass.”
“Alright. Why is he texting you about his ass?”
“Because he wants a scorpion on it. I don’t know.”

NOVA (BECKETT'S TATTOO ARTIST SISTER) + CHARLIE (STELLA'S HALF BROTHER) !!!

🏹watch the ink on his arms shift and flex with every rotation of his hands, the constellations and planets on his left arm a beautiful compliment to the flowers and vines on his right

🏹He considers me quietly. Here in the muted light, his eyes look moss green. Dark and deep. “Did you find your happy, then?”
“What?”
He takes a step forward and reaches for a towel, wiping his hands on it with quick, practiced movements. His whole face is angled lines, a frown twisting everything down. “The first night you were here, you said something about looking for your happy. Did you find it?”
I’m surprised he remembers, but I guess I shouldn’t be. Beckett has always been good with the details.
“Bits of it.”

🏹For your happy. Where do you think you’ll find it?”
“I don’t know.” I curl my hand around my glass until the condensation tickles my palm. I’m busy thinking about my answer when he finds one for me.
“Cause I think it’s still in there somewhere.” He gestures in my general direction with his bottle. “You wouldn’t glow like that if it wasn’t.”

🏹thumb a strand behind her ear.
That’s twice today I haven’t been able to keep my hands off of her. I feel trapped between holding her at a safe distance and tugging her closer. A pendulum swinging endlessly back and forth.

🏹laugh and scoop my hair away from my face with my palm and watch as Beckett presses down harder on the gas, a grin tipping at his lips. It lights up his whole face, that smile—the lines by his eyes deepening, his bottom lip a bit crooked.
I release my hair again and close my eyes. I feel like I’m floating, flying. A gentle snip to one of the strings tied tight around my lungs, Beckett’s low laugh whispering through the cab of the truck.
Happiness.

🏹Don’t laugh, okay?”
“I won’t,” I say emphatically. I’d never laugh at Beckett. Not ever.
He considers that, rolling his words around in his head as he squints out at the fields. “I wanted to be—” he laughs a little bit, his palm against the back of his head. “I wanted to be an astronaut.”

•“I think most kids want to be an astronaut for at least half their childhood. I guess I was just checking off that box. My mom got me a spacesuit for my eighth birthday and I don’t think I took it off for an entire year

•I don’t know. I just wanted to look at the stars.

🏹“Meteors come from comets?” She mumbles it into my neck, lazy and slow.
I nod. “Yeah.” I slip my hand down to her hip and squeeze once. “Bits of comet, I suppose. When the remnants start to fall through our atmosphere, they catch on fire.”
“When you p-put it like that,” she laughs, a slight catch in the sound. “It sounds beautiful.”
I smile against her temple. “It is, though. It is when you think about it. These things are circling the sky for—god knows how long, really. And then we knock into their way and they start to fall, lighting up the sky as they go. Think about every kid that looks up to the sky and sees that flash of light. That’s magic, isn’t it?”

🏹“Evie,” he breathes, his deep voice even deeper than usual. I don’t think I’ve ever liked the sound of my name so much. “I really did mean it.”
“I know you did,” I whisper. Beckett isn’t capable of saying something he doesn’t mean. It’s one of the things I like best about him. I know he’s always telling me the truth.
“I like you,” he whispers. His gaze slips down to my lips and holds. “I like you so much.”

🏹“I thought about you all the time,” Beckett says from right behind me, his chest brushing against my back. A single fingertip traces the top edge of my shirt where it sits against my neck. I drop the keys to the porch.
“I think about you all the time,” he continues. When I tilt my head back to look at him, his hands are clenched in fists at his side. That ridiculous flower crown is still in his hair. “Do you think about me?”
“Beckett.”
“Do you?”
(...)
“Evelyn.”
“Of course I think about you,” I say in a rush. Some secret part of me unlocks, unravels, unspools. I’ve been thinking about Beckett Porter since I left him in a tiny coastal town all those months ago

🏹You’re not tired of me yet?”
“If you’re waiting for me to be tired of you, Evie,” he raises his hand and catches a strand of my hair, curls it around his finger and tugs once. There’s an answering pulse low in my belly. “You’re gonna be waiting a long time.”
I search his eyes to measure how serious he is. “You’re very good at hiding all of this.”
“Really?” He looks surprised. “Doesn’t feel like it. I feel cracked wide open around you.”

🏹“The last time you were here—” He cups my face with both of his hands and presses a gentle kiss to the tip of my nose, the space between my eyes. Everything in me shivers and melts, and my hands grasp at his elbows. “The last time you were here, I wanted to kiss you under this tree.”
“You hid it well,” I murmur as I follow his retreat, silently begging for more.
“Nah,” he says, his voice a rasp. “You just weren’t looking close enough.”
And then he kisses me.
And he shows me everything I missed.

🏹Did you find your happy today?
Yes, I would tell him. I found it right here. With you. Like this.

🏹His skin is warm beneath my touch, flushed pink in the low light. “I feel like I've been waiting for you forever,” I confess.
His face softens.
“I know, honey.”

🏹Maybe this is what happy is supposed to be. A person, a place. A single moment in time. Beckett in the hallway helping me untangle the sweatshirts from around my shoulders. A family of cats jostling for our attention as we trip into the kitchen. Tea in the kettle on the stovetop and two mugs sitting side by side right next to it

🏹“You can have me anyway you want me, honey.” His hand cups the side of my face, cradling my cheek. “You know that”

🏹“So this is—I’m asking you to stay this time,” he rasps. “I’m trying to do it right. Come home, honey. Stay with me for a bit. I’ll make you those muffins you like and won’t say a damn thing about you stealing my socks. We’ll sit on the porch and I’ll tell you about the stars. I’ll bring you flowers every day.” He scratches behind his ear and shifts his phone, a rustle of fabric against the bottom speaker.
“I’m sorry I didn’t say this next part.” He gives the camera a grin, knuckles against his jaw. “I want you to stay with me. You can leave when you have to. So long as you come back when you’re done.”

🏹“Everyone has a lot of ideas.”
“Ideas about what?”
“For me to tell you how I love you,” she says simply, like she’s not driving that shovel in the center of my chest and breaking my ribcage right open for all her sunlight to come pouring through. A smile starts in her eyes, nudging at her bottom lip until she’s standing there and grinning at me, looking like every happy thought I’ve ever had. I take a step closer and she tilts her head back to keep her eyes on mine. “Josie’s suggestion involved fireworks.”
“Don’t need fireworks,” I grit out, my voice rough and tight. My hands ache to hold her. “Just need you.”

🏹“I did love your video,” she tells me. A whisper—a secret—a flush in her cheeks that deepens as I uncurl her fingers one by one. “Who knew you’d be the TikTok sensation between us, farmer boy?”
I tangle our fingers together and grip her hand in mine. “I missed you,” I say. “I missed you so much. I feel like I’ve been missing you the whole time I’ve known you.” I swallow hard. “Loving you, too.”
“Well, you don’t have to miss me anymore,” she says, her voice soft.

🏹 “Ask me,” she whispers.
I don’t need her to say anything else. It feels like we’ve been slowly making our way to this exact spot since I stepped through the door of a bar, all those months ago.
“Honey,” I cup her face in my hands and smooth my thumbs across her cheeks. I drop a kiss to the tip of her nose, the little dip at the corner of her mouth. I close my eyes and exhale. “Did you find your happy today?”
I feel her grin when she kisses me.
“Yes,” she whispers into my mouth. “I did.”
