Across the different titles I’ve read from Banana Yoshimoto, one leitmotif of hers continues to intrigue me: sleep. In her hands, sleep is never just a biological need—it’s a liminal space, a threshold where the boundaries between the living and the dead dissolve. It allows for communication, confrontation, and sometimes, reconciliation. The protagonist’s dreams and half-awake states become conduits for supernatural encounters, revealing deeper truths about grief, guilt, and the persistence of memory. In
 Hardboiled
, Yoshimoto explores this idea with particular sharpness. The nameless heroine is on a short excursion in a small hot spring town. On her way through the mountains, she comes across a strange, dilapidated shrine—home to a nameless entity. Unbeknownst to her, the entity attaches itself to her and brings a string of misfortunes: a terrible udon joint she visits later that day catches fire, and an eerie, melancholic ghost woman appears at her hotel room in the dead of night. While dealing with the aftermath of these events, the protagonist begins to recall her late lover, Chizuru, who shared the same supernatural sensitivity. Chizuru, too, had a foot in both worlds—and died tragically in a fire years ago. Her presence in the story re-emerges not just in memories but through dreams and apparitions that feel both deeply personal and disturbingly ambiguous. Sleep in Hardboiled is not passive—it’s permeable, a transient and porous realm. When the protagonist sleeps, her subconscious becomes open to forces that are not entirely her own. There are the malevolent (the shrine’s curse, the angry projection of Chizuru) and the benevolent (the real Chizuru’s comforting spirit). This treatment of dreams aligns with traditional Japanese beliefs, where dreams (yume) are often seen as messages from the spirit world or reflections of the subconscious. The protagonist’s troubled sleep becomes a kind of internal landscape, a projection of her unresolved feelings and fears. The first dream of Chizuru is bitter and accusatory—not a true spirit, but a manifestation of guilt. The protagonist has tried to move on, yet part of her fears she has "forgotten" Chizuru. This distorted dream version of her is not a haunting in the horror sense, but an emotional echo—a reminder that memory and guilt often co-author our nightmares. Yoshimoto suggests that the dead we see in dreams are often shaped by our own lingering emotions. Sleep, then, becomes a kind of emotional battleground—a space for self-confrontation. Later, when the protagonist wakes at 3 a.m.—the so-called “witching hour,” a time steeped in supernatural lore—she encounters a woman who appears deeply disturbed and suicidal. Her grogginess in this moment matches the ghostly atmosphere: is this woman real? A dream? A spirit trapped in her sorrow? The ambiguity isn’t resolved, and it doesn’t need to be. The woman’s unresolved pain seeps into the protagonist’s world, emphasizing how the dead (or those emotionally lost) linger in spaces where the living are vulnerable—like sleep. In contrast to the earlier, warped version of Chizuru, the final dream offers something radically different. This time, the "real" Chizuru appears—gentle, kind, protective. It’s not a moment of horror, but of grace. The protagonist, worn down by the emotional turmoil of the night, finally opens her heart. Sleep, in this case, becomes sacred: a quiet, intimate space where love transcends death. This moment doesn’t erase the pain, but it softens it. It acknowledges the loss while still honoring the bond. The night’s events—with its curses, ghosts, and memories—mirror a kind of shamanic journey or emotional purging, a kind of purification ritual. By morning, the shrine’s influence has faded, and the world feels lighter, not because the supernatural has vanished, but because something inside the protagonist has shifted. The dead—Chizuru and the ghost woman—aren’t exorcised; they’re folded into her understanding of life and loss. Sleep has become a vessel for that transformation. This reflects Yoshimoto’s broader fascination with boundaries: between life and death, past and present, dream and reality. In Hardboiled, sleep is not an escape—it’s a confrontation. It’s the place where the dead voice their grief and the living, if willing, can finally hear them. Its fragile, transient nature mirrors the fragility of human connection, which somehow persists—despite, or perhaps because of—its impermanence. If Hardboiled channels the spectral through dream,
 Hard Luck
shifts the focus to grief itself. It’s a slow-burning story where pain doesn’t erupt; it seeps. Yoshimoto doesn’t treat grief as a dramatic explosion, but as erosion—a quiet, slow undoing of one’s sense of normal. Hard Luck is a meditation on sorrow, not in isolation, but as something that reshapes relationships and seeps into love, time, even identity. The story centers on a nameless protagonist whose sister, Kuni, lies in a vegetative state after a brain hemorrhage. We watch as the protagonist processes the impossible decision of letting her go, and how the strain of that situation alters the way she connects to other people—including herself. Kuni, just before the incident, had been preparing for her wedding. Her fiancé, devastated and overwhelmed, retreats to his parents' house and calls off the wedding. His older brother, Sakai, steps in—not as a replacement in love, but in duty. He visits Kuni in the hospital, reads to her while she sleeps, and maintains a quiet presence. Through these visits, he and the protagonist begin talking. Their bond develops slowly, gently, but carries with it an undercurrent of guilt and tension. Kuni’s condition—technically alive, but unreachable—turns the hospital into a kind of emotional purgatory. Her coma gives the illusion that she’s only "asleep," as if waking is still possible, which forces her family to begin grieving even while she still breathes. This in-between is what psychologist Pauline Boss describes as “ambiguous loss”—a mourning without closure. Time moves strangely here; each second feels like both a stalling and an advance toward death. The hospital, with its sterile lighting and quiet rituals, becomes a theater of denial. Family members drift in and out, each carrying their own version of pain. The mother collapses physically under the weight of her grief and retreats entirely. The father lashes out at Kuni’s fiancé, directing his anger at the one person who feels easiest to blame. His outburst at the funeral reveals how sorrow corrodes compassion and logic. Even the fiancé, often viewed as cowardly, is given nuance—his silence becomes a form of quiet self-punishment. When he attends the funeral, it’s not redemption, but an act of quiet remorse. Sakai, too, is caught in the orbit of this strange grief. His presence at the hospital—standing in for his brother—is unnatural. And so is his growing closeness with the protagonist. Their connection hurts because it’s born from pain. It feels like an intrusion, a betrayal. But it’s also real. Yoshimoto captures that uneasy truth: sometimes love grows in soil we’d rather not plant in. Their final walk together—listening to Kuni’s unfinished mixtape—is one of the most affecting moments in the story. The songs ("September," "Autumn Travels") aren’t just background music; they’re emotional relics. Each note, each lyric, carries Kuni’s presence. As they listen, they are walking not just with each other, but with her memory. Sakai’s promise to meet in Italy "when summer comes" isn’t just romantic—it’s deferral, a waiting room for healing. Grief, Yoshimoto reminds us, demands patience. The seasons in Hard Luck act as emotional markers. Autumn, Kuni’s favorite, is now a frozen point in time—its beauty untouchable, preserved only in memory. Winter, the present, is cruel and empty. Summer—the future—offers something softer, but uncertain. The protagonist’s tears at the hospital are not a breakdown but a breakthrough: a sign that she’s finally allowing herself to feel. Her decision to study abroad is part escape, part rebirth. She’s not running from Kuni’s memory, but learning how to carry it without being crushed. The final lines—“This autumn will never come back… it’s setting out on its distant travels tonight”—say everything. Grief is not a thing to be conquered, only endured. The stars haven’t changed. The past hasn’t changed. She has. That’s Yoshimoto’s quiet thesis: that sorrow reshapes who we are. Love remains, but it wears new faces. It waits in new seasons. In Hard Luck, there’s no neat closure, just a fragile hope that—like the seasons—our hearts, too, might one day thaw.

one of banana's more tenebrous and death-centric works, for sure. i don't know how to describe the emotion evoked except that it felt like floating on the resonance of a minor chord, drawn out almost to completion. also, the deep autumnal backdrop was very timely; unlike the glittering summer of goodbye tsugumi, the season painted here is pensive and gloomy, but not yet entirely lost to winter.

Hardboiled opens as the narrator treks high above her secluded mountain hotel on the anniversary of her lovers death. Hard Luck opens with another female narrator, this time at the bedside of her sister, who lies in a coma. Exploring the ghosts of love, memory, and intimate secrets, these are two haunting and atmospheric tales from Japan's leading female writer.
