This is a fun book and is comparable somewhat to "The Princess Bride". It takes Chinese folklore, history, and some imagination and mixes it all together into a fun story.

I am in no way an objective reader of this book.

My paperback copy is from 1984. I have no idea how many times I've read this book, and I am NOT much of a re-reader.

But this is my second favorite book in the world, after The Last Unicorn, which I first read in 1968 and have reader probably dozens of times since.

It's been a few years now since I last read this book. I was delighted when I found our SFF book club was going to read it. I'm a little worried if some of the other folks will like this book, I guess, partly because it means a lot to me and I Have Feelings About It. But to each her own, I guess. We'll see.

And yes, I still find it good, and yes, I still cry at the end, 37 years after I read it for the first time. It's magnificent.
