I thoroughly enjoyed this novel; Mbue has a unique writing style that’s conversational, yet pensive and reflective. I didn’t love the ending - as it didn’t end how I expected it would - but it was a great read nonetheless.

The audible version of this book was amazing - the performance of Prentice Onayemi was absolutely engaging, and I was so endeared to the characters through his voice. The story itself was interesting, and I was attached to each of the characters. No one is a bad guy, no one is a good guy, but like in life - you ultimately want all of them to be happy. 

I think the value of this book is that it gives nuance to an understanding of the life of an immigrant. It gives a different lens to view America, and it does so with compassion. I'm sure I'll be thinking about this book for a long time, and I'm so glad it came up on a most-recommended audiobook list last month! I highly recommend it!

A novel that was very real and very honest.

Imbolo Mbue was able able to create a cast of characters that were complex and flawlessly intertwined into the lives of each other. Each character had their flaws, but you were always able to understand why they were making the decisions they were making.
