It's only in secondhand books that you can savor encounters like this, connections that transcend time. And that's how I learned to love the secondhand bookstore that handled these books, our Morisaki Bookshop. I realized how precious a chance I'd been given, to be a part of that little place, where you can feel the quiet flow of time. 

Maybe the reason my uncle was always clowning around in front of people was to hide what he was feeling from them. The effort must have been excruciating.

I just withdrew into myself and closed everything else out. I was overly self-conscious, I had too many ideals and ambitions for one person, and because of that, I ended up without a single one I could hold on to. I was an empty person. That’s what I was. It seemed like there was absolutely nowhere I belonged in this world.”

That’s when I finally realized it wasn’t just a question of where I was. It was about something inside me. No matter where I went, no matter who I was with, if I could be honest with myself, then that was where I belonged.

Day by day, the leaves of the trees along the streets turned to gold. It delighted me to see how well the changing colors matched the slow transformation happening inside me.

We talked about the book for a while. It was a joy to feel connected to someone I’d felt I had so little in common with. It thrilled me even if it was just with someone like my uncle— no, it thrilled me even more because it was someone like him. It was as if , without realizing it , I had opened a door I had never known existed. That’s exactly what it felt like.

Jinbocho, Tokyo. The neighborhood of bookstores and publishers, paradise for readers. A quiet corner out of time, a few steps from the subway and large modern buildings. Rows and rows of windows full of books, new or second-hand. Tatako, twenty-five years old and with a rather colorless life, does not attend regularly. However, it is here that the Morisaki bookstore is located, which has been in her family for three generations. A store of barely eight tatami mats in an old wooden building, with a room on the top floor used as a store. It is the kingdom of Satoru, Tatako's eccentric uncle. Enthusiastic and a bit deranged, he dedicates his life to books, especially since his wife left him. Quite the opposite of Tatako, who hasn't left home since the man she was in love with told her that he wanted to marry someone else. It is Satoru who throws him a lifeline, offering to move him to the first floor of the bookstore. She, who is not a great reader, finds herself living in the midst of crumbling towers of books and clients who do not stop asking her questions and quoting unknown writers. Es mi primera novela de Satoshi Yagisawa pero sin duda no será la última. El libro nos habla de Takako una chica de veinticinco años que se encuentra sumida en una increíble tristeza después de que el hombre con el que estaba saliendo le dijo que se iba a casar con otra mujer. Teniendo nada que hacer más que respirar en su departamento en los días siguientes recibe una llamada de su tío Saturo para preguntarle (honestamente no le da opción) si quiere ir a ayudarle a la librería Familiar porque actualmente se le complica estar al cien por ciento atendiéndola. Sin nada que hacer (literalmente) ella dice porque no y se va. Una de las cosas como lectora que me da mucho miedo es conocer autores nuevos, le temo porque hay ya grandes autores que tienen un prestigio que a veces siento que no concordamos e incluso ponerle una reseña mala crea un conflicto conmigo, de hecho es de las cosas que cada cierto tiempo estoy trabajando personalmente. Pero siendo honesta me gusto mucho este libro lo disfrute tanto es de esa clase de libros que hacen sentir en casa a mi corazón. Esta unión familiar entre Satoru y Takako como poco a poco van entendiéndose uno a otro, saber lo que ha pasado en el tiempo que no estuvieron comunicados y aprender sobre todo el trabajo que conlleva la librería no solo el vender, sino hablar con los clientes habituales, conocer el vecindario, los eventos y que cada a pesar de que se encuentra en una calle llena de librerías no todas son lo mismo, es precioso. Quiero decir esto porque siento que es importante influyó mucho en la forma en que leí el libro incluso las estrellas que le asigne, es que me recuerda tanto a personas que ya no están conmigo que también fueron tias y tios, ver como cuando creces tienes una idea o percepción de las personas que se encuentran en nuestro círculo y podemos asignarle un adjetivo como “mi tío el loco” o “mi tío el amargado” y cuando creces te das cuenta que son completamente otra persona.

Why does reading this made me want to quick my big girl job, book a one-way ticket to Tokyo and beg some uncle to let me work in his secondhand bookshop? 

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be nice and cozy. The first half of the book was really nice. The whole vibes were really good and just the book shop aesthetic was so nice. And the whole story with the uncle and the main character's relation was really nice. And wholesome and cute. And it made me feel very cozy inside. Comforting. The second half of the second half of the books is kinda It does have ups and downs, but it's like the kind it kinda falls off in the second half of the book. And it's very easy to read, so it's very nice book to get into book reading. And yeah, the whole romance with Wada was kind of forced, I felt like But all in all a nice cozy good read.

It was a a quick and light read. I would've wanted more depth on the relationship that the main character experienced but the guy was a reall big douche and maybe that is more than enough. I would also want to hide out in a bookshop after such heartbreak. I also didn't expect that she wasn't an avid reader and i'm glad they made her one.

The story was so sweet as well, its not as deep as i expected it to be but the realizations of how much the girl means for her uncle (satoru omg gojo) was so heartwarming. The aunt as well, im so hally she didn't die at the end and i loved how satoru was so patient for her and that showed how he truly loved her.

The implication of a forming romance was subtle and cute. It makes me want to follow how their relationship would bloom. The guy the girl met in the coffee shop was SUCH A PERFECT MEET CUTE SANA ALL ME WHEN. But the initial reason was not it (waiting for an ex) AND THANK GOODNESS it was resolved at the end. i want a romance like that mann, to meet someone in a coffee shop + he's a fan of literature as well GIVE ME GIVE ME FLEASS. anyway, i hope thats the story i'll get to read on the next book.

this book is heartwarming and a light read. i love the characters and Takako's character development after visiting his uncle. it just shows how reading can bring comfort to people. and the quotes and lessons, they're great.

Loved this. Almost a fave ever. Cute story on not fitting in, doing things against societies mould, love of books, quirky people. She has a break up and moves to her uncs and lives upstairs his bookshop. Creates unexpected connections and has a gr8 time once she allows herself too. Feels realistic and relatable.

It doesn’t have any heavy conflict, only the soft unfolding of a life that is slowly finding its way again. I found myself wishing I could sit there too, surrounded by old books and that kind of peaceful silence.

one of my best reads this year! this book had been on my tbr list for a long time, and i just had the chance to read it, and it was my best decision ever. i love that this book gives me heartwarming feelings; i even cried when i read it at 45% progress, like, sobbingly hard. i feel close with all of the characters in this book; it feels like i also live around jimbocho at morisaki bookshop as a people-watcher. it shows how i enjoyed my time a lot reading this book. along with a short-length page, of course it had my heart. can't wait to read the sequels!

kae back at it again by reading some japanese novella, and honestly, i really liked it. day at the morisaki bookshop by satoshi yagisawa was such a refreshing read—a simple slice-of-life story that felt comforting in the best way. it's the kind of book that quietly speaks to you, especially when you’re at a low point. i think it’s a perfect read for anyone who has ever felt like giving up after life throws something unexpected and painful. the way it shows healing through small moments, quiet routines, and the presence of books made me reflect on how sometimes, it’s okay to just slow down and let life slowly piece itself back together.

Touching story. I like anything that’s in relation to books and writers. Would’ve given it a 4 star except that I found the writing a little too cheesy at times but maybe I’m just jaded when it comes to happy stories.

this book isn’t plot hungry. it was slow, steady, and intentional. people who’s not going through anything might find it hard to appreciate this book although i wasn’t feeling anything rough in particular it still felt comforting just to see how her life was narrated from this to that. i appreciate this book a lot. it is healing.
