In 1860 London, a poverty-stricken Dora Damage illicitly takes over her ailing husband's bookbinding business and finds herself caught up in binding expensive volumes of pornography for aristocratic rakes, contending with violent debt collectors, epileptic daughter, scheming doctors, sick husband, and wealthy dilettantes as she discovers she has become involved in an illegal trade of sex, betrayal, and greed.
