Bella Forrest — 2019
"I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct. Those monsters had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night--where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware. But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning"--Publisher marketing.

** spoiler alert ** In this book we follow 21 year old First Lieutenant Lyra Sloane in a world where vampires are supposedly extinct. This theory is debunked when Lyra herself is taken by a vampire named Dorian Clave and the two, with the hesitant agreement of his clan, decide to work together to ensure safety for vampires especially after he gives her proof that the home of the vampires, Immortal Plane, now has a torn barrier due to humans and is dangerous for them to return to. In this book we follow as the soldiers and vampires form reluctant alliances whilst cooperating in team building exercises and missions to help rid the world of wild redbills (as vampires can communicate with them and tame them) and Dorian and Lyra have unearthed feelings which are obvious to pretty much everyone but are never acted on. The book progresses and after Lyra is in a three day coma after an almost kiss, Dorian and the other vampires begin to give the soldiers the cold shoulder leading to a much more negative end to their 6 week trial period. Before leaving and going home for good, Lyra plans to meet with her uncle (head of the Bureau) but after eavesdropping she learns that the Bureau never wanted to live in harmony with vampires and had planned to lure them into 'updated housing' before then gassing them. In a rush to help before it's too late, Lyra Bryce Zach and Gina go against the Bureau and help the vampires to flee to safety although the comradary is not reciprocated and many of the vampires decide to leave back to the Immortal Plane rather than have to trust humans again (admittedly it does make sense but I still cried). Lyra finally kisses Dorian, diminishing his fear that she would be in severe pain if they pursued their feelings and they go to find the few vampires left in hiding, hoping some of them will be on their side to help them bring down the Bureau and bring a sense of companionship and alliance between humans and vampires. Okay so I loved this book and I just could not put it down it was so addicting and so gripping written that I just wanted to keep reading and reading. I liked how in this book the romance element was there in the background and we were more focused on the action and team building between vampires and humans, especially Lyra and Dorian, and we got to really feel for these characters which made the ending so brutal and left me as a reader also feeling as betrayed as our characters did.
