First thing first, I did not know this was a novel. I saw the movie long time ago and I loved it. I thought it was a great movie and there was this very emotional scene were Beverly's son was chasing his father when he left and was never coming back. that killed me in the inside even though I was young.     However, this is Beverly's true story. In this memoir you get to read about her struggles, achievements, and maturing while raising a child. I was able to empathize how she was really determined to go to school despite having no encouragement and support from her family nor the father of her child. Everyone has their own set of challenges with their lives and it's good to see what good comes from it. I find it motivational.     This memoir mainly talks about her and not so much about her son. So don't start judging this mother. Obviously times were different back then and of course mothers were quite different in how to raise a child. And just as I said, everyone has different obstacles in their life. She was young when she gave birth her son. Not fully matured, she still did whatever she wanted. She didn't really do a lot for her child much but in the end she started thinking more of him. This was a fast pace novel and I give it 5 stars.
