A nice spin on the classic Dracula story, this follows quite a few key people and is told in a journal entry style of writing, something that is not seen often and this book does it wonderfully. Told mostly from a viewpoint of a brother who serves in the war and also his sister. A young nurse also plays a larger role in the story and seeing their stories connect is truly wonderful and makes for a rounded story. There is a surprisingly good amount of horror interwoven in these pages, especially those of John Shaw as he recounts the horrors he saw of the enemy's trench. This story also has a fair amount of nods back to the original story of Dracula.

The story changes pace as our characters are whisked off to Transylvania to save John Shaw's sister from the vampire who has wooed her. A surprise twist makes the contents of this book much more shocking and intriguing.

I'm trying to read the vampire fiction that is such a rage amongst the teens. I read Twilight last year and was severely disappointed, but I thought I might enjoy Bloodline because it has (or makes reference to) characters from the original Dracula. The basic premise is that Mina Harker's son, Quincey, seduces a young woman during World War I. The book started out strong, but quickly fell apart when the characters went to Transylvania. I wouldn't recommend this book even for young adults.
