The Mars trilogy, written more than 20 years ago, is astounding in its scope: geology, botany, pioneering, global warming, terraforming, sexuality and social norms, political activism, the process of creating a constitution and forming a new government (Green Mars), group dynamics, a.i., robotics, economics and trade, religion, memory, longevity, biohacking and more. What it doesn’t have is an interesting plot at the character level. Yes, there are memorable characters (Sax, Jacky, Coyote, Art, Hieroku), but I often confused Ann, Maia and Nadia. I can imagine the author’s dilemma of showing characters grow and change over 200 years, yet being recognizably themselves. It’s not a perfect trilogy, but I enjoyed the wide variety of topics and I’m glad to have read (2) and listened (1) to the entire series. It makes the current NatGeo Mars TV show that much more interesting.

If you like hard sci-fi, this series is a must. This was a solid finish to one of the densest series I've read. I was a fan, though the first book I think is by far the best, I did enjoy all three. Not sure if I'll read more by Kim Stanley Robinson though, as it does move really slowly.
