I had had sex with a cis man, and shortly thereafter something shifted: how my inner resources were being allocated, what I was suddenly compelled to do. I felt controlled, invaded, run down, insignificant. It was horribly, awfully wrong. An internal force wanted to destroy me, still or again, and I knew I didn't have the strength to survive it.

This essay collection is really kneecapped by how much it tries to cram in. Brevity is sometimes beneficial, it is a good skill to have, but quite a few of the ideas here would have benefitted from being expanded and/or communicated better.

Of course, this could be just the fact that the topics of the essays jump around quite a bit - maybe they needed to be curated a little bit better. There are also a couple of takes in there that made me raise an eyebrow but hey ho, my ability to withstand a bad take and move on with my day must have greatly increased.

I really enjoyed the first piece, about Cambodia, and the one concerning exploitation of women in the fashion industry - from garment workers to fashion models. But the pieces about autoimmune diseases were the ones in which I took personal interest, particularly "Horror Autotoxicus" and "Consumpcyon".

“Body horror” and “cultural imperative” were absolutely top notch. Many of the essays are also well-written, but the composition of the book as a whole is a little confusing.
