A follow up to The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine Lewis looks at the financial turmoil that followed the American sub-prime mortgage collapse in the global markets. Iceland, Greece, Ireland, all three of these countries were heading towards a crash regardless of what was happening in the US as all three recklessly borrowed more than they could afford. Germany was scrutinized next as the 'responsible' EU country that would save these countries - yet at the same time invested in the worst of the US subprime mortgage market blindly following rules rather than assessing risk. Finally Lewis returns to the US - at Federal level too big to collapse bit what about at State or City level? I immediately thought of Detroit of course but he focused on California. My goodness - what a mess. How can these economies ever recover?

I enjoyed this book. Lewis did a great job of taking a topic that is rather boring, (and that I didn't find interesting) and making the pages turn.

Lewis' prose moves at a swift pace and, while the topic is droll, the writing is lively and entertaining. So entertaining, in fact, that the only thing that concerned me was whether the facts sometimes got in the way of a good story and were 'smoothed' to fit a determined narrative.

I'm not knowledgeable on the subject to be able to say one or the other but other than that one reservation, it's otherwise and excellent set of case studies on what led to the Global Financial Crisis.
