Six years ago I went to a publishing event where they gave attendees a swag bag with stickers, notebooks, pens and a couple of newly released books. I got Mood Indigo, I took it home, and at some point I gave it a go. I could not get through the first few pages, but I decided it was due to the English translation; the book has been haunting me ever since and taking up space in my rather small bookshelf. So I decided to give it another go, see what it was made of (given that it's got ~4 stars on Goodreads). I got a Spanish digital copy from my Spanish library hoping that a translation closer in terms of linguistics would make the reading experience better. It didn't.

So I only got through the first 8%, or 4 chapters, and I feel bad that I'm giving up on it so soon, but life is just so short and there are so many books to read.

I just can't get past the magic realism in this - I don't buy it, I don't understand it, and I have forced myself through enough Garcia Marquez's books to have learned that magic realism is just not my thing.

So I'm just going to stop trying. And maybe, once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, find the book a new home.
