Brandon Sanderson

The Hero of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn

Tricked into releasing the evil spirit Ruin while attempting to close the Well of Ascension, new emperor Elend Venture and his wife, the assassin Vin, are now hard-pressed to save the world. This adventure brings the Mistborn epic fantasy trilogy to a dramatic and surprising climax as Sanderson's saga offers complex characters and a compelling plot, asking hard questions about loyalty, faith and responsibility.

The Hero of Ages

Great story, incredibly fun read, delightful twist at the climax.

I just feel like Brando Sando sometimes gets too irreverently existential. I love that he's not afraid to explore faith and theology but I feel his worldbuilding is often too clear.

Fantastic. So many epic moments and excellent worldbuilding. While I didn’t cry at the ending, it was still extremely emotional. There are a lot of people out there that say that Brandon doesn’t write with style. I can see their argument, but I think Brandon has bigger fish to fry when he writes than being eloquent or flowery with his language. He’s balancing complex rules, complex characters and character motivations, and the literal machinations of Gods when he writes. Sorry he didn’t describe the dying sunset of Scadrial better.

Emperor Elend Venture, having survived only to become a Mistborn himself, struggles to find clues by the Lord Ruler that will save his world, while a guilt-consumed Vin takes on a task of ending the cosmic power of the Ruin mystic force.

The Hero of Ages presents itself as a grand finale to the Mistborn trilogy, promising to answer many of the questions raised in the first two books. While Sanderson’s world-building and magic systems continue to impress, the journey to the climax left me with some mixed feelings. The book’s scale is enormous, delving into higher stakes and deeper philosophical themes. However, I found that the more personal, character-driven moments that defined earlier books seemed overshadowed by the larger metaphysical conflicts. The story, which was once focused on individual choices and their consequences, gradually becomes more about abstract cosmic forces and divine intervention, which, while fascinating, shifted the emotional core of the narrative in a way that didn’t fully resonate with me. While The Hero of Ages certainly has its moments of brilliance, particularly in the way it ties up the series’ central mysteries, I couldn’t shake the feeling that some characters and their motivations were not fully explored or explained, while some characters felt over extended. The ending, while epic in its scope, left me with a sense of dissatisfaction, as it seemed to pivot away from what had made the series so compelling—the characters themselves. In the end, The Hero of Ages offers a conclusion to the trilogy, but it didn’t quite deliver on the emotional resonance I anticipated. The scale of the narrative grew immensely, but it sometimes overshadowed the characters who had been the heart of the story. For readers who appreciate a more philosophical conclusion, this will hit the mark, but for me, the shift away from character-driven choices left me feeling a bit unsatisfied.

My review for the entire series is written under book 2

A Mistborn Novel

What an ending!! Can see where this might continue in the future (?) fingers crossed. So much interesting philosophy and life lessons that are applicable to our own present day situations (politics, environmental, religion, friendships, loyalty, power, and more!). Not to worry though, you can enjoy this for the simple pleasure of what it is an amazing story and powerful imagination!! Hope to see this series as a movie sooner than later.

3.75/5. didn’t magic me quite as hard as the first book, but had a heck of a resolution. i agree wholeheartedly with the decisions made at the end of the book, but would have liked to have understood more of the world before we lost it. also, i think the book could have been 15-20% shorter if we stopped recapping every 4 chapters.

Took me forever to finish this one and boy did it hurt. Thank you Sanderson for being an insane plot writer, I gasped once every like 20 pages from shock.

Core theme of hope and the way our hope and love can touch others is something that will always make me cry. Im not quiet sure how to carry on after this one.

God probably the first book to almost make me cry. A bit of a struggle to get into at the start but oh, was it worth it.
