For a debut novella, this was pretty damn solid. Daniel has always been one of my favourite fantasy reviewers and so I had more faith going into this than I would for most other books, and I was not disappointed. 

Things I liked: 
1)The characters. They were certainly the driving force of this story from the first page to the last. They felt like real people (the main characters, at least) and it made the feeling of imminent doom you get in the first chapter stronger than it would’ve been otherwise. 
2)The world. I know this is only a novella so there was only so much of the world that could be explored, but considering the limited space, the world building was done well. It gave the promise of something more in future books and that’s good enough for me. 

Things I didn’t like:
1)The dialogue (sometimes). This is probably just me being picky but there were a few moments of dialogue that I felt disconnected from and had me waiting for it to get better again. Like I said though, I’m being picky here. There’s definitely other books I’ve read where there was worse dialogue moments. Horridly worse. 
2) The length. Okay this isn’t a genuine criticism, but hear me out. I know it’s a novella but GOSH I could’ve devoured a whole 500+ page novel about this world and these characters. 
3) The pacing. The slow moments were few and far between but they existed and it was in those moments that I felt like I could’ve put down the book and not pick it up again for days. I only ever want to put a book down if I have to—not ‘cause I want to. 

And all the at being said, I greatly enjoyed this novella and would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy/detective stories.

tbh i think it was a very good debut and don't understand the hate it's getting.
in a reading slump and this was the only book that truly got my attention. 
it's not flawless but i liked the atmosphere, the premise... i only wish we had gotten more. more description, more plot, more pages... i feel like this will be a great book upon reread when the others have come out and we know more about the story it is setting up. 

i need the sequel asap

(edit) might actually be a 4 - i keep thinking about it and i'm so excited for the second one but i just wanted more from the characters in this one. i already want to reread it

Definitely the start of something promising. Didn’t realize it was just a novella with a massive cliffhanger ending!

I knew the author from his youtube channel and that's how I came to buy and read his first book.
This is a novella, short, fast-paced, set in a fantasy industrial-era kind of world where the society is organized around an all-mighty ruler seen as god. His chosen acolytes are superhuman and above the law, the military are unquestioned and even the police is seen as doing god's work.
The story centers precisely on a police procedural plot and the main characters are part of the force, investigating a gruesome multiple murder that introduces them and the reader into a spiralling conspiracy.
Being short fiction, one can't expect a lot of worldbuilding or character exploration, but the author does a good enough job of both. The way he shows the friction between police and military, the reaction of people to police attire, the reference to a rebels and some description give the reader enough information to begin to picture a context. Khlid and Chapman are the only two characters that are developed enough to have real identity, individuality, and that the read can and - my case - will care for. 
The plot itself and its fast pace work well, giving me a feeling of sipping a cocktail I can later drink more of.
The prose is simple, mostly unadorned, seldom clunky but also rarely good enough to be memorable or awe-inspiring.

All in all, the novella is worth reading if you are a fantasy and mystery or police procedural fan and you don't mind tasting a snippet before you actually get a full exploration of a world or saga. I'm curious to know what this conspiracy and this world will come to and also to find how Daniel Greene's prose improves as he get more experienced.

madre mía en fin... que no os engañen mis 3 estrellas, para mi eso es Good, me ha gustado.

Me adentré en este libro por recomendación de un conocido y sinceramente a parte de que le había gustado venía bastante ha ciegas, no sabía ni de que genero era el libro con eso lo digo todo.
Y what a surprise ha sido, me ha flipado.

No le doy más nota por que la novela es corta y creo que podía dar mucho más de si y profundizar más en los personajes y sus relaciones, el caso que siguen los inspectores creo que daba para muchas más páginas de desarrollo, y el mundo en si creo que podría explicarse mejor (aunque a lo mejor es intencionado que sea un tanto obtuso en este primer libro). Pero aún así para ser una primera novela del autor está muy bien estructurada y los personajes muy bien construidos, se sienten muy reales.

En cuanto pueda le meto mano al segundo libro!!

Not a book I vibed with from the beginning. As a character-based reader, I need to like the characters to enjoy the story. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough time in this novella for me to be properly introduced to the characters. Add in that I usually do not venture into this genre. The low rating of this review isn't as much due to the writing style, but the rushed story which didn't give time for character development. Despite this, I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

This semester is destroying my reading, that's why it took me so long to read this.

My favourite thing about BoP was the setting and the overall atmosphere. I'm really excited to see what the other books will be like in terms of creativity and the plot.
Writing was the thing that made me a little bit hesitant. I guess I just don't prefer writing this harsh (not that it's bad, it's just the vibe I'm getting) and straightforward.

A Great Debut!

For those not in the know, the author of this novella, Daniel Greene is one of the leading YouTubers covering the realm of Fantasy Fiction. He is indirectly responsible for introducing me, and many others to authors such as Brandon Sanderson, Evan Winter, R F Kiang, Robert Jordan and many many more. 

So, there was undoubtedly be a lot of expectation when he announced that he was publishing his very own work of fantasy fiction. I believe he has met those expectations head on. Is it perfect? No, you can definitely tell this is an author still honing his craft. But he has painted a picture of a world I desperately want to explore more of, full of amazing intrigue, one that feels could be explored in book upon book and still leave stuff seeping off the page.

I'm excited that this is only the beginning!

So I like Daniel's channel and I was excited to read his first book, and was very enjoyable!

 First of all, I wish at least I had extra 50 pages, so Daniel could build the case and the relationship way better and deeper. Second, I was a little worried about the way that the "fantasy" elements were showed, I wish I had a little of the lore way earlier, just a little bit.

Okay, I like it in an introductory way to the series ( if I'm not wrong it's gonna be a trilogy?!), and I very enjoyed the cliffhanger in the end. Good Job Daniel :)

I picked this one up since I've been watching Daniel's videos for a while and we seem to have similar fantasy tastes. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this novella.
Daniel created a powerful world. It was very atmospheric. I'm genuinely very interested in learning more about this universe and the Gods' and Chosen's hierarchy, and I'm looking forward to any future works he produces in this realm.

This novella had a lot of potential, but just didn't quite live up for me. I liked the idea a lot. Unfortunately, it seemed to focus a lot on making things seem horrific rather than delving into the actual meat of the world. The writing just didn't work for me. I felt very jarred while reading and the dialogue was often not natural. 

I do think there was a lot of promise here, but its going to take time and more practice to make a new fav for me.

5 stars because I managed to read almost all of this in one sitting even though I'm in a reading slump, and I truly cannot wait for more of this world. 
Maybe I should actually try some more detective fantasy..
