To start off with, this book was a quick and easy read. I started it at 6 in the evening and read on and off till around 10pm when I finished. This is all down to the way the book is written with it being in verse format. Sarah Crossan writes all her book in this style (from my knowledge) and I love it because it means that a powerful story is told in simpler style that is easy and quick for you to read. I do understand that this may not be what everyone likes but for me it is an easy way to get through a book and add to my list of books that I have read. However, this book really did disappoint me. I think the main reason for this is the other books that I have read of hers I have loved and have been 5 star reads for me and I expected this one to follow the trend before I even read it, anticipating it to be a 5 star read. It was not. This book means really well but I just didn’t love it, the story is really relevant and lot of topics mentioned can be educational as it talks about the topic of forced marriage and abuse. But it was all just very rushed. It felt like the story was going too fast and for me it just wasn’t coming together, this also resulted in the ending being rushed and overall the story not really coming together. Another thing that I didn’t like about the book was the fact that when it was in Nicu’s perspective, it was written in really bad English to demonstrate his nationality and highlight that he doesn’t speak good English which may have been the plan by the author but ended up being more frustrating than effective. For me, I felt I was focussing too much on trying to understand what Nicu was trying to get across rather than the actual story itself. I bought this book thinking I was going to love it because I usually love Sarah’s writing style but this one just wasn’t for me. Please don’t let my review put you off reading it because I have seen some people who have loved it but for me however, this book was 2 star read.
