Brian Rutenberg
The landscape, complex in its layers, has guided abstract painter Brian Rutenberg's approach to composition and color for the entire development of his career. He draws on the landscape that he remembers from childhood, growing up between Pawleys Island and Charleston, South Carolina, where the rivers and lakes join the ocean. He adds to this a strong influence from the music of Glenn Gould and Celtic culture, as well as the painters Joan Mitchell and Hans Hofman. The resulting work elicits a profoundly visceral experience as he reinvents abstraction with a sense of spirituality. This volume is the most comprehensive presentation of his work to date; it includes more than 90 illustrations of his paintings and drawings.
