Pros:
- complicated relationships: I love the relationships in this series, all of them are really messy and complex and I think that it makes them all so interesting. Jamie/Charlotte obviously have a messy dynamic, but I also love the relationship between Milo and Charlotte, and Leander and James a lot.
- realistic depictions of trauma: A lot of this book is dealing with the outcomes of the trauma the characters have experienced and I really like how realistic it is? Jamie is dealing with his PTSD through most of this book and I think it was good how so much time was put into exploring how doing all these things these kids do has an affect on you, especially if you're a teenager. Anyway I just feel like I don't see this in YA enough and I'm living for it
- Jamie and Charlotte: I LOVE THEM. I WOULD DIE FOR THEM. MY BABIES. I loved how their relationship developed in this and the angst was like .. so good. 

Cons
- the plot: where .. was it? Nothing really happened in this book until the last 100 pages and it showed. The relationships and character development didn't really make up for the fact literally NOTHING WAS HAPPENING the entire time
- the villain / twist was predictable: The things involving the villain & their plan was so predictable. I also thought their whole monologue / motivations was so ... "moustache twisting villainy" which was annoying after I thought The Last of August did a good job of complicating the villains

This was the darkest and least enjoyable book in the series for me so far.
It was slow and depressing. James and Charlotte are separated for most of it, and neither is in a good place mentally; every chapter is written in a weirdly-paced, disjointed, stream-of-consciousness way that struggles at assembling a coherent narrative, largely because neither of the narrators feel quite coherent.

Then the last 100 pages things start turning around, and the epilogue is the best part of the whole book. So it ended up landing on 3 STARS, but most of it was more like 2 1/2.

I’ll still read the last book because as a whole I like the series, but man, this one really put that to the test.

           This was my least favorite of the bunch. A few possible reasons: 

1. Jamie and Charlotte? A toxic relationship that I’ve had enough of. I was hoping for a satisfying conclusion of some sort where they genuinely realize they’re better off as friends (distant friends at that) rather than the happyish ending we got. 

2. What was the plot? Oh yeah, the exact same thing as the other books. Jamie getting framed for something he didn’t do, pining after Charlotte, and suffering major PTSD. 

3. The adults in this book are useless and irresponsible. They can’t even deal with their own teenage-brand drama. It’s annoying and unrealistic.

After the whirlwind of the second book, this is exactly what I needed.

Yes, this book is very character-driven compared to the previous books, but it's so wonderfully written. I just love Charlotte and how flawed she is yet she change towards the better while still being her brilliant self.

And WE REALLY DO DESERVED THAT EPILOGUE, OKAY. The heartful things they say to each other gives me life.

Only 3 stars because although I love everything about this retelling, Watson is nothing without Holmes & vice versa. This book ended up being a very whiny version about how much they missed each other & couldn't function w/o the other. We know this!!

Why, oh why does this series continue to let me down?
 
After the disastrous events of "The Last of August", both Jamie and Charlotte are trying to piece their lives back together. Jamie is back at college, trying to pretend to live a normal and sorted life. He has a girlfriend now and talks more with his father; but even though he tries to keep it low-key, he can’t stop the memories from flooding back to him. The memories of Charlotte and their adventures and everything that was and is between them. Charlotte, on the other hand, hasn’t gone back to school. She’s busy hunting down one of the Moriarty’s. And here’s the crux…
 
I can’t even remember which Moriarty is still alive and which one she is shadowing. This book is a tangled mess of teenagers‘ emotions, tantrums, and petty revenge actions. How long has it been since I read it? A month? And I can’t even properly remember the plot. Charlotte’s brilliance is still there, but Cavallaro doesn’t let her shine the way she did in the first book. Holmes and Watson feel more like normal teenagers in this one than a super detective duo. That’s alright. They’re teenagers and even Charlotte experiences feelings and emotions sometimes. But the plot felt messy and all over the place. I missed the plot twists from book one and I missed the slow-burn from book two.
 
Sadly, this book fell short of my expectations.

I am almost done this series and I cannot wait to see how it ends. I liked this third instalment so much more than the second book. I think I need that school setting to really get into it and I just felt like it was closer in tone to the first book.

I def enjoyed this book. I have always enjoyed the two leads in this story and I really love Jamie alot. I really wish I had re-listened to book 2 because I think book 2 and three were very closely tied together and it did hinder my enjoyment just because I did not have firm grasp on these facts. I def loved getting in both characters heads and I did enjoy the mystery overall. I am so excited we are getting book 4. I will def edit this review on me re-listen next year. I just loved seeing the impact of the past events on Jamie and how it really effected him.

Eek! That was good. It took me little bit to get into the story and remember what went down in the previous two books, but MAN once I hit that point there was no stopping me.

I was also nervous going into this book because it has two perspectives, unlike the previous books in the series. However, it totally worked because when one perspective's chapter ended I HAD to keep reading to get back to them and find out what would happen next.

I've missed the Sherlock vibes in my life and this brought them all back. :)

Also, the plot twists though. I honestly thought I had some of it figured out, but no, the curveballs just kept coming.

Of course, Holmes and Watson continue to have such an intriguing dynamic together and I can't wait for that to be furthered in the next (and last?) book. Maybe I shouldn't have read this one until the next one came out because I need to know what happens next...
