Bubble

Bubble

Based on the smash-hit audio serial, Bubble is a hilarious high-energy graphic novel with a satirical take on the “gig economy.” Built and maintained by corporate benevolence, the city of Fairhaven is a literal bubble of safety and order (and amazing coffee) in the midst of the Brush, a harsh alien wilderness ruled by monstrous Imps and rogue bands of humans. Humans like Morgan, who’s Brush-born and Bubble-raised and fully capable of fending off an Imp attack during her morning jog. She’s got a great routine going—she has a chill day job, she recreationally kills the occasional Imp, then she takes that Imp home for her roommate and BFF, Annie, to transform into drugs as a side hustle. But cracks appear in her tidy life when one of those Imps nearly murders a delivery guy in her apartment, accidentally transforming him into a Brush-powered mutant in the process. And when Morgan’s company launches Huntr, a gig economy app for Imp extermination, she finds herself press-ganged into kicking her stabby side job up to the next level as she battles a parade of monsters and monstrously Brush-turned citizens, from a living hipster beard to a book club hive mind.

Wow! This was genuinely so much fun!!! Have you ever tried getting a bit of extra cash driving for Uber? What about slaying dangerous alien monsters for Huntr! This book was a hilarious take on the gig economy. The characters had such a great dynamic and chemistry, which is great when you’re forming a highly skilled and powerful team to go around killing imps (you know, the ushe 🥱). I think Mitch had some of the funniest panels and I ended up really loving him 🙌 The art and color-work was amazing 🤩 The Brush was such a vibrant environment with really cool looking alien wildlife, and even the urban spaces within the Bubble had really beautiful backgrounds. The only thing that didn’t work for me were some of the jokes that seemed to be taken from 2018’s Twitter, and unfortunately don’t think will stand the test of time 🫤 However, for each one of this there were like 3 more that made up for it and genuinely made me laugh. The story and writing were great! I really loved the ending each character got, while leaving space for a (maybe unlikely) sequel. I really enjoyed this novel and probably will pick it up again soon. It’s too bad it’s not more popular. I think I’ll take a listen to the podcast it’s based on, too!

this was sooo fun oh my godddd. a visual AND storytelling treat. i actually also have not listened to the podcast this was based off of (it's been on my to-listen for ages but i still have yet to get around to it) so i went into the comic wondering how this would read - if i would feel on the outside of an inside joke, or how the serial podcast part of this would translate to graphic novel. but at no point did i feel like this was originally a different medium, or that i was missing something. i was fully immersed. i don't think this is like, perfect or anything, but it was perfect for me i loved it. so glad i picked it up.

i really wanted to like this :( this graphic novel is written like one of those weird “adult” cartoons, where it’s so laden with jokes that are either unnecessarily sexual or just plain crude and sounds like it should have come out a 12 year old who just learned the word fuck. there are so many sexual references that it is just uncomfortable. the characters can’t take anything seriously, and i can see how some might enjoy that, but it contributed to the message missing the mark. a great thing that i have noticed about a lot of YA graphic novels is that they take these complex, hard hitting issues and turn them into a digestible message for readers while still being impactful. the attempted anti-capitalist message felt more liberal, AOC’s tax the rich dress at the met gala vibe for me and just really missed the mark. the dialogue in this book just feels outdated. i checked the publishing date when they started ragging on hipsters (the beards were funny i’m not gonna lie) because it sounded like something straight out of anywhere from 2010 to 2017, but it was published in 2021! this year!!! idk maybe it’s just marketed towards millennials who for some reason, are still reading YA graphic novels. to sum it up: buzzfeed vibes in the worst way humanly possible

This title is wacky in all the right ways. It has a fun cast of characters and even though it's several short stories, you get the image of how everyone fits together and cares for each other.
