This is actually a 3 and a half stars. I did like this book very much (for the record I read the uncorrected manuscript that I won in a giveaway). Much of it reads like a fairy tale,or more accurately folk tales as they may have been originally written - simple language which highlights rather than obscures the brutality of the story being told.

The book revolves around two young boys, Ewan and Colby whose friendship evolves when Colby saves Ewan from the machinations of the fae. It is an act which seals the fate of both. While the story was generally well-written, I had a few problems.

Character development - I feel not much was done to develop either character. We really didn't get to know them as persons as much I'd like. 

The Fae, so many of them! So many creatures introduced yet...something seemed to be missing. The need to explain the characteristics of the major ones was taken care of through "academic" treastises which didn't always quite work and sometimes interrupted the flow of the narrative, in my humble opinion.

It was a good read. Recommend.
