I Wish for You (a Romantic Comedy)

This is the second book I've read by Camilla Isley, and I have to say her writing is fluffy, fun, and a whole lot of fun. When you read a lot of serious reads, like I do, it's great finding lighter stories to fill in between the heavier reads. This was one of those times when this was the exact type of story I was looking for.

First, let's talk about what I liked. Arthur! He was such an fun character. I loved witnessing his struggle with trying to understand how things were in the twenty-first century. I did end up liking Ally as the story progressed as well, but I have to admit she was a tad difficult to actually connect with. She was pretty bratty and whiny, which had me rolling my eyes here and there when the story first started. But by the end I was proud of how she evolved, how she was able to admit when she was wrong, and how she moved on to be better because of her flaws.

Now for my issue... the relationships. I just never felt a connection between these characters. Ever. I don't want to give any spoilers on how this story wraps up, so I'll try to make this as vague as possible. From the synopsis alone, you know that Ally is hung up on her ex, James. It's revealed early-on that he basically broke up with Ally out of nowhere, and because of this lack of explanation, Ally struggles with accepting the fact. But I never understood why she was so hung up on him, and why she wasn't able to move on with her life. (view spoiler)[ This is a huge spoiler, so I had to mark it as such... but at the end of the story, Ally and James get together for a night and everything goes wrong. There's no connection at all between them, no chemistry, and the entire night is a flop. If they were truly so in love and solely broke up for the reasons that are revealed, why are they soooooo incredibly incompatible at the end? I would think if the love was still there, which we're told many times that is is (on both sides), then how could this encounter go so terribly wrong?  (hide spoiler)] Also the friendship between Ally and Arthur didn't make much sense to me either. (view spoiler)[ Another HUGE spoiler... Ally and Arthur determine that they are in love with each other at the end. But, WOW! I mean, I assumed the story was going in that direction... but I never once felt it. At all. Then BAM! We're supposed to believe they're in love. I struggled with this a lot. A lot.  (hide spoiler)]

As you can see, I struggled with this book. On the one hand, it was so much fun to read and had me giggling quite a bit. I liked the overall story and found it very enjoyable. On the other hand, I found certain aspects unbelievable and struggled to feel a connection among these characters. But aside from the few issues I had with the characters themselves, I really did like this story! That's why I decided to go with a middle-of-the-road "I liked this one!" type of rating. I think a lot of people will really enjoy this read, and it's definitely a fun beach read. I'm really looking forward to reading more Isley books!
