An introspective read on the power of literacy and what literature is. Made me think about literature in a way I haven’t in a long time, and I just graduated with a BA in English. While some say the voice of the main character does not match up and is distracting, I didn’t find this to be true. She sounds smart, but it’s obvious she is. Just because she’s poor doesn’t mean she’s dumb, just uneducated. Didn’t want to put the book down. Recommend to all, but probably best fit for high school students learning about literature. Lots of tell don’t show about the power of literature and what it is/isn’t.

           We read this in language arts- I love it! It's a very tender book. When Sopeap died, it reminded me of my language arts teacher and made me cry. This book impacted my life immensely in a positive way!
