so far i'm still feeling lukewarm towards the characters but the romance is well written and feels entertaining enough. i will say, as somebody who LOVES the scheming, the machinations - the DRAMA - there's not enough of it for my taste, so the overall plot feels like it's advancing veeery slowly. on the other hand, that means that for those who are approaching historical, politics-centered novels for the first time they'll probably find this easier to follow, without the confusion and headaches that heavy and complicated plotlines might leave.

This is one of the best danmeis I’ve read, but don’t go into it thinking there will be a magic system or otherworldly aspects. Through and through, it falls in the realm of historical fiction/political drama. 

The only thing that was just a little tedious was the politics and how many people were involved in the various political/military factions. However, everything else about this outweighs that tediousness.

This is one of the best danmeis I’ve read, but don’t go into it thinking there will be a magic system or otherworldly aspects. Through and through, it falls in the realm of historical fiction/political drama. 

The only thing that was just a little tedious was the politics and how many people were involved in the various political/military factions. However, everything else about this outweighs that tediousness. 

Not a bad story. I think how much you will like this one depends on what your preference to wuxian vs xianxia (one is more historical fictions, one is more magic and cultivation). This is definitely more wuxia. This is not Heaven's Official Blessing or Husky and His White Cat Shizun. This is historical drama.

I really wish there was an audiobook version. There are some things like political intrigue (which was done really well, just hard to follow for my brain) and world building that just translate to me better in audio and his saves my poor neck, because I am trapped in an old lady's body. But that is me being spoiled.

I do like the main couple. From the affectionate first meeting, to betrayal and bitter enemies to lovers was very well crafted. The slow burn that felt realistic and the earlier misunderstanding tragic. 

I am conflicted because this does very well represent some gray characters living in a very backstabbing and cutthroat court. I like Yan Xiohan and Fu Shen, but I think I'd be terrified of meeting them in real life. On the other hand, I can't blame them much. They would be dead if they were not willing to be ruthless at times. But I think that is what makes them intriguing as characters. In contrast, the way they treat each other seems all the more precious and sweet in this world where you can trust few and depend on others sparingly.

My biggest crit for this novel is that at times I felt like it moved slow. I didn't really get into the plot into mid-book. It won't stop me from giving the sequel a look.
