Beautiful lyrical book of a young orphaned girl and her friendship with a poor mute boy in the family that adopts her. Apparently there are 7 books in the series, unfortunately only the first one has been translated - hopefully we will be seeing more!

This is one of the sweetest and most heart-warming stories I've read in a long time. The fact that it's a Middle Grade novel is even more impressive. 

I like that this book doesn't shy away from the hardships that Bronze and Sunflower face growing up. It touches on poverty and famine and how it impacts their family, but at its heart, it isn't a sad book. The interactions between Bronze, his family and Sunflower were so touching and warm, and the extents that they go to for her just really affirm what this novel is all about- human compassion and kindness, community in the face of hardship, love. 

It feels like such a perfect book for both adults and kids. You become very quickly attached to the characters and their story. It's definitely become a favorite book of the year for me!
