A dancing smile glinted in his eyes. “I think,” he said, “that you are breathtakingly functional.”

I was too young to know the truth then. That victory meant another’s defeat, and sometimes our own defeat. That winning meant sacrifices, and sometimes ones that even our own people were not willing to make. That in war, someone always paid.

“Daughter of No Words” was a truly fascinating read. The magic system in this was fresh and new, and I felt that the protagonist, Tisaanah, was easy to invest in. While bold, and sometimes bordering on brash, her bone-deep desire to rescue the friends she left behind in servitude was moving. I rooted for her almost immediately. 

The MMC, Maxantarius, was just as compelling. While I’m a little disappointed that the slow burn wasn’t all that slow, I genuinely love their relationship and felt like it moved along very organically. 

They are, in some way, mirrors of each other. Two sides of the same coin, if you would. 

Now onto why I could only give this book 3.5 stars. 

This book was incredibly long. I think there was quite a bit of “fat” that could have been trimmed here. This is a trilogy, but if the following two books are as lengthy as this one, perhaps they should have gone with a series. I would have preferred to see the more technical side of the magical system explored, but maybe that’s just the nerd in me.

Things moved very quickly at the end of this novel. Without spoiling, Tisaanah set out to undertake a huge task. Something that should have been almost impossible. And yet, it was over in what felt like a moment. It came off a little rushed. Like Broadbent was in a hurry to move on to the next hurdle. However, there were some really enjoyable moments in this. 

And lastly, the EPILOGUE. The epilogue frustrated me beyond belief. It took away any remaining mystery on who the enemy was before going into the rest of the trilogy. It felt very trite and I was very disappointed to see things laid out like that. Where’s the mystery? Not here. 

All of this said, I’m still planning to move on with the trilogy! The things I liked about this book and this world do outweigh what didn’t spark joy with me.

I really like the characters and world in this. I think there was some heavy exposition dump at times and room for more substance at other times, but I think it’s setting the tone great for the next one! Really enjoyed some of the final scenes in this one as well.

What an incredibly boring book. It’s a feat of heroism that I managed to get as far as I did. Possibly one of the reasons I hated it so much was the fact that my library only offered it as an audiobook, and the narrator’s voice was awful. But still - this book lacked anything exciting for me. the tropes in this book were so good so spot on so creative. the grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, slow burn, touch her and die like come on i was living for it all. 

not to mention the fmc was inspiring and amazing and bad ass. i recommend to everyone.

Most of booktok says that this is a must read and that the series reminds them of ACOTAR. I can't say I particularly agree with that. I liked the plot, the twists that develop, and the characters, but I didn't feel a very strong attachment to the characters. That being said, I will still be reading the next book (because maybe it is like ACOTAR in that ACOMAF was way better and because I want to see Reshaye through to its end). But I seriously hope it is easier to get into.

Definitely one of the better indie fantasies I’ve read in awhile. Things this book does right: the main characters are easy to root for and endear themselves to you easily. The romance is great, definitely a subplot but it’s enough. The pacing of time - as in there actually was a passage of time. There’s nothing I hate more than have a action packed 500 pages only to find out it’s only been 2 weeks - unrealistic. Also a compelling villain! Things this book could work on: fleshing out a bit more of the world and the background. The reasons Tisaanah is so desperate to get back to Threll. I’m personally not a fan of creatures inhabiting others so that was also a mark down for me. Also hate when characters do the same thing over and over and expect different results - it’s boring and frustrating. But I have high hopes that the series can improve, so on to book 2!

Tisaanah was EVERYTHING she’s such a powerful woman, she taught herself a new language, escaped her master, forced the order to give her a chance, convinced a broken Max to mentor her, developed a connection with Max, signed her life away once again to stop slavery, managed to survive Reshaye living inside of her, brought down the Mikov estate. She is a beautiful and strong and astounding character. 

Max, max max max, i had my reservations about him at first but omg, when we heard his backstory … everything he does is justified but i’m glad he’s trying to move forward and not let it consume him anymore. The fact he so willing so sacrifice everything for Tisaanah is so beautiful, even after he’s already sacrificed so much of himself.

Sammerin is my fave side character, although all the side characters are so interesting and everything about them makes me want to read more.  

The magic system and world in this books is beautiful and so fantastically written. In fact everything is well written, it’s gorgeous and immersive and i never want to stop reading about it. 

This book is ugly at times but even the gruesome is flawlessly beautifully written. This book is enthralling, action packed and and unputdownable. I’m not sure i’ll ever read a book as elegant and breathtaking as this book. I have no idea how she came up with some of the stuff in this book so i’m so so very happy she did because it was genuinely astonishing <33

It was a surprisingly refreshing story and  even more characters. 

Tissanah is a girl who was taken from her hometown and sold in slavery from a young age to endure all kind of physical and mental abuse. Ten years later, Tissanah escapes captivity and goes to Ara where she has to train with an unwilling Max to join the Orders and therefore help her friend and all the slaves that she left behind. 

Tissanah is an interesting character that I knew I'd love since the first chapter. She's determined and stubborn, optimistic but without being overly so or annoying, talented but no goddess. I liked that the first part of book we mainly see her training and perfectioning her powers, nothing came to her easily or in a silver platter. She worked for all she is and has and let me just say how much I enjoyed her struggling to learn a new lenguange, her confusion was as adorable as relatable to me as non-native speaker. 

I specially appreciated how Miss Broadbent handled sensitive topics such as abuse and rape and Tissanah's complicated emotions towards her former master. Her personality is not flawless, her insecurities are not brushed under the rug and most importantly, her traumatic experiences don't disappear after a few chapters.

Max is a wonderful multilayered character, witty and sarcastic in the best kind of way and from which I took my new motto: "I'm not done for this". Me too, dear Max, am not done for a lot of things such as dancing, exercising, cooking, dating, self-expressing and just socializing in general so yes, I've got your back buddy. 

The whole cast starting from the barely present Serel to the adorable machine of destruction that is young Moth, are beautifully done with each one of them having a vital role and just the enough depth that they could easily make their own books. 

The romance is subtle for the most part but with a strong impact. I enjoyed a lot their realistic relationship that goes from hostility at first to grudgingly becoming friends and opening up to one another, to something even more beautiful. There's no over exaggerated declarations of love or insta-anything and their interactions were a lot of fun to read. Tissanah is no damsel in distress and Max is no knight in shining armor, Max is the sword that she wields to cut the dragon. 

There's a really well done magic system and world blinding with no unecessary long and dull descriptions and even tho the story is nothing original, this book is one of those that sucks you into pages and makes you lose all sense of time and space.
