Six Scorched Roses

Six roses. Six vials of blood. Six visits to a vampire who could be her salvation… or her damnation.Lilith has been dying since the day she was born. But while she long ago came to terms with her own imminent death, the deaths of everyone she loves is an entirely different matter. As her town slowly withers in the clutches of a mysterious god-cursed illness, she takes matters into her own hands. Desperate to find a cure, Lilith strikes a bargain with the only thing the gods hate even more than her village: a vampire, Vale. She offers him six roses in exchange for six vials of vampire blood–the one hope for her town’s salvation. But when what begins as a simple transaction gradually becomes something more, Lilith is faced with a terrifying realization: It’s dangerous to wander into the clutches of a vampire… and in a place already suffering a god’s wrath, more dangerous still to fall in love with one.

woah. i DEVOURED this book in just 3 hours!!! it was such a fun easy read and truly sucked me right in. for it being only 183 pages SO MUCH HAPPENS… the story moves so quickly but doesn’t leave you wanting more at the end. i truly felt satisfied with the whole book start to finish!! so well written!!! this book pulled me out of a LONG reading slump and i’m so happy it did.

I liked it but I feel like it was sort of predictable what was going to happen in the end.

I am slowly becoming more and more obsessed with Carissa Broadbent! This was a novella but while reading it didn’t feel like a novella. It was a fully flushed out story with characters that were well-rounded. I can understand why I needed to read this in between the books in the first duet. I really enjoyed this story and was entertained and slightly stressed about what was going to happen. It also makes me so excited to read the second book the duet.

this was fine. it did not excite me and I know it's a novella but it felt so... rushed? from the little we got to see of them on ta&tsck I would think their relationship went a little deeper and was more meaningful. I enjoyed the change in fmc as in, not a warrior just a scientist like that was fun and different. but everything felt like it was revolving around the romantic relationship (duh you'd say) but it just felt too convenient and repetitive. all in all. it was fine.

Really enjoyed this novella. Very different from Wings&Night- more tender and sweet.

3/5 Well, it was fine. If it had been longer than the two hundred pages it has, I probably would have skipped a lot of pages to get to the end, but luckily it was not. I think I have to part ways with this author, because even though her books are not bad, for me they are still a bit bland. Instead of falling in love with reading and getting so caught up in the story that I don't want to stop reading, all I think about is when it will end. That’s not the best sign, so I think I need to say my goodbye. "I want only you, Lilith. Whatever of you I can have. I’ll take one night. One hour. One minute. Whatever you want to give me. I’ll have it.”

This was such a cute little side Novella. I loved Vale and Lilith! I wonder if they might make a side appearance in the second book in the series. It gave a glimpse of what was happening while Oraya and Raihn were in the tournament also what the gods were capable of.

✨Here’s the thing about the God of Abundance. Abundance wears many faces. The god of plenty is also the god of decay. There can be no life without death, no feast without famine.

✨“After so long, you realize that knowing things doesn’t especially matter very much. Knowledge with no context is meaningless. That’s not the real treasure.”

✨“Time is the most valuable resource of all, and some of us are perpetually short.”

✨And when the days passed, and my exhaustion and my enthusiasm led me to loosen my typically-closely-held control over my socially unacceptable attitudes, my raw enthusiasm leaking through as I talked excitedly to Vale about some theory or another, I turned to see him staring at me, brows drawn. His expression made me freeze, my face flushing—because I’d let down a wall I shouldn’t have and wasn’t sure what I might have revealed beyond it. “I—” I started. But he just said, calmly, “You are a very beautiful woman.”

✨“You do not have to do any of this alone,” he said. It wasn’t the first time someone had said that to me. But it was the first time I really wanted—needed—to hear it.

✨“It must be hard,” he murmured. “To bear the weight of so much affection in a life so short.”

STOP THIS WAS SO GOOD!! if serpent and the wings of night was epic and violent then this was kind of the opposite, very tender and romantic while still being the same vibe, ugh this was so good. I knew going in that people like the longer novels in the series but they like the novellas more and I can’t decide just yet but I do think I agree, this was short and sweet and I really loved it! 10/10 no notes

BOOK REVIEW

Six Scorched Roses / Carissa Broadbent

Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

honestly, I don’t really care for novellas. I can generally go without them, and don’t find them overly enjoyable or don’t find the characters to be very intriguing.

somehow, in less than 200 pages, Carissa has managed to make these characters shine, to the point that I became obsessed with them. I literally got a book hangover from this book, that’s how hard I fell in love with it.

it was a fully formed world, with it’s own side characters, and honestly Carissa slayed with this one! the nickname ‘mouse’ sent me - “you’re an especially nosy mouse today” & “you’re shaking, mouse” - deceased 💀💀

Vale is it for me in this series - I loved Raihn in Serpent, but Vale did things to me and I can’t wait for more of him in Ashes

This was a short and sweet novella set in the world that The serpent and the wings of night is in. Carissa really outdid herself with this one !
I thought that this book might be rushed and while the plot was fast paced, Carissa managed to make an entire story in this short novella. The characters were good and the writing was beautiful. I loved the romance between Vale and Lillith and the ending of this book was so good. I might be wrong but I think Vale and Lillith were mentioned briefly in The serpent and the wings of night so I'm excited to see if there will be more of their story in the next crowns of Nyaxia book

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH I loved this book so much that I can't express in words how much it captivated me. AND I am so grateful that, even if it is considered a short story, it is a full story with history, character development, and key scenes that only adds more to the Nyaxia world. I loved Lilith from the first pages. Call me crazy, but anything that is associated with death intrigues me. And to find that Lilith was followed by death from day one and still found a way to live with all the odd looks and wrong words sent toward her. She found the strength to live her life fully and not be afraid of anything. By the way, I love the name Carissa chose for her. I think "Lilith" is the perfect name for her. I also loved Vale from his first entrance. Looks like Rhain has some competition on my agenda :))) Immortality does come with boredom and a lot of curiosity. I loved the dedication he put into helping Lilith, and also the chance he gave himself. Even if this book is completely different from "The Serpent and the Wings of Night", it kept me reading it fully "in one breath". I think it's set perfectly in the world Carissa is building. The pace of the action is different from TSatWoN, BUT it keeps you in the story with your heart in your throat non the less. Now I'm ready for "The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King" because not only can't wait to see Rhain and Oraya but also I can't wait to see more of Lilith and Vale. I love a lot of characters from this world/series, and I want to be back in this world.

"petals from a rose" - yetep, kyle reynolds
"after you" - gryffin, jason ross, calle lehmann

he was eternity while I was impermanence—

lilith and vale are the definition of “she talks, he listens to her” like she enthusiastically talks about what she’s studying while he’s happily listening and allowing her to talk about what she loves UGH I LOVE THEM and the way they understand each other in a way no one else can

What a sweet novella. I think this is the perfect addition to the Crowns of Nyaxia series. This makes me like Vale so much more now that we see a little more into his love story.

Such a cute and sweet novella!! I LOVED having a glossary ab the world in the back of the book lol Wish the first book at that.

This story was lovely, the characters had so much depth in this small book I wish I had more time with them. Excited to see if they show up the in the second book!

My only complaint is that I wish this was longer....but I have a feeling we'll see more of Vale and Lilith in the rest of the series.

This one is much slower and more romantic than Book 1, but I didn't mind that. It feels very much like a love story of two outcasts trying to do their duty to the people they care about. I really enjoyed this break from the war and a view of the gods of The White Pantheon. Also....Lilith is a QUEEN!! Just strolling around with no fear and no apologies for doing what she has to do.

"We should finish our work."

I started to turn, but Vale caught my shoulder.

"Say what you're going to say, mouse."

"I wasn't going to say anything."

"Don't lie to me."

I stared at him, unblinking. I didn't know what to make of the way he was looking at me like he actually wanted to hear my opinion.

Or thought he did.

"Not all of us have the resources to travel," I said.

"Humans and your money."

"I didn't say money. I said resources."

He glanced at me in confusion. I gave him a grim smile.

"Time, Vale," I said. "Time is the most valuable resource of all, and some of us are perpetually short."

Maybe he was used to being cowered at. I did not cower. Why should I? I'd already met death three times now. So far, the fourth was a bit of a disappointment.

I put my hand on my sisters shoulder, and for a moment I considered telling her that I loved her.

I didn't say it, of course.

If I did that, she would know where I was going and try to stop me. Besides, a word was useless compared to what I was about to do. I could show my love in medicine and math and science. I couldn't show it to her in an embrace - and what good would a thing like that do, anyway?

Besides, if I hugged her, maybe I wouldn't be able to let her go.

"Lilith-" she started.

"I'll be back soon," I said.

He looked at me the same way that he looked at those dead crops. Like I was the corpse of a dream, buried in everything he couldn’t save.

The god of plenty is also the god of decay. There can be no life without death, no feast without famine. The difference between excess and absence a mere whim of his moods.
