Beyond the Veil (Zodiac Academy #8.5)

Amazon.com and Wall Street Journal #1 bestselling dark fantasy romance series from authors Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti - a Booktok sensation! The stars called us. The Veil closed at our backs. And now death holds us in its clutches. We were torn from life before our time, a Savage King, his queen, a betrayed son, a wronged brother, a scorned wife and so many more. We watch those we left behind as they struggle against the grip of the stars, the answers to so many of their questions within our grasp and yet out of their reach. But what if we could find a way to answer their pleas? What if we could find a way to help them from this side of the divide? And what price would such a thing come at? ***This is a bridging book which takes place beyond The Veil (in the land of the dead) during the events of book 8 in the Zodiac Academy series. It should be read after book 8 to avoid spoilers for that book and holds the answer to what takes place for the characters who are held within the clutches of death by this point in the story, as well as vital clues to the conclusion of this epic series***

This is an absolutely unnecessary and ridiculous book. They call it a novella but it’s the size of a regular book and it has literally zero reason to be. Honestly about 65% of the book is rehashing what book 8 was and they literally even reused at least one chapter from book 8. Waste of 15 hours frankly.

The worst of the series for me personally. It said to read this due to it having spoilers for the last book but it was seriously a huge recap for the previous book & honestly It took me forever to get through it. Hopefully the last book picks me up again. Ugh!

I tried… because I wanted to finish the series but I just can’t. This was too much. I don’t know how I made it this far…

Do I love these characters and this series? Yes. I have laughed, cried, mourned and felt the heat from the very beginning. The heirs and twins will always be dear to me in lots of ways. I will absolutely see their series to the end! Do I love the multiple POV? Yes so much yes. it adds to much diversity to the series and gives so much more love to each individual we get to meet. Do I also believe some POV are completely unnecessary? Yes very much so. Beyond the Veil POV was such a fun addition, but I don’t believe it must be read in order to get through the series. There was so much in this book that made it hard to get through, which in the end made it ehh, but had it been shorter and more precise it would have been great. I loved meeting Hail and Merissa Vega directly. I loved hearing about their fierce love for their children. I didn’t love how repetitive their POVs felt though, they were constantly saying the exact same things as their previous POV. I did not see the point in Radcliff, Marcell, Serenity or Geraldine’s mother (who I don’t even remember her name, that’s how pointless she felt to the story) Meeting Azriel Orion was awesome. But I felt he could have been even more developed rather than just studious and quirky. He had such great potential while watching over his son, that I felt was lacking. I loved seeing certain chapters from 8 in the others POV we hadn’t seen. It was fun to meet The Lion Queen, and I loved learning her history but I completely agreed with Hail- she could have got to the point quicker. POSSIBLE SPOILERS- Key Chapters I loved- (The witches in the woods- holy moly🥵) (chapter 21- I DIED laughing it was so good.) Overall, I rate: 3⭐️ 3🌶️

“my two best friends started kissing each other with the force of a wrecking ball, the tension in the room shattering around them as they devoured each other’s mouths like the stars would fall from the heavens and set the whole world alight if they didn’t“
