The Long Road to Freedom
Two young slaves are on the run. One makes it, the other is killed. Travor, who has been dubbed as one of the worst overseers ever, was fired for not coming back with Bobby Gene. Bobby Gene is Travor’s prized negro who sought employment on Master Wellington’s plantation, who just happened to be Master Dalton’s neighbor. Strange things are happening on Master Wellington’s plantation. It had been brought to his attention that someone had been raiding his property. There was nothing of great value; crops, chickens, eggs, as well as a few of the slaves’ attire. A young white couple traveling cross country has fallen on hard times when they are robbed, leaving them with only the clothes on their backs and an old trunk with their personals. They find themselves in the state of Missouri. Their names are Jeffrey and Pauline Turner. They end up taking temporary residency, and thought they had been hired by Master Wellington. Jeffrey was put in charge to find out who this mysterious person was who had been raiding his property. Several months of staying in the hay loft, Jeffrey is ready for it to be over. He gets his wish when he happens to see someone running through the dried up fields. Following this person, he happens upon a cave. He finds out this person is black. They become the best of friends. Bobby Gene and Anna Bell are reunited through Jeffrey. The three of them come up with a plan for Bobby Gene to escape to the north. He is welcomed by Jeffrey’s family and friends in Pennsylvania. Jeffrey seeks work at the sawmill after finding Pauline and Matthew in bed together. Old man Wellington passes away, along with a few others. Bobby Gene comes back to Missouri as a free man, and a lawyer pays a surprise visit to Wellington’s place, only to find out that Anna Belle has become the mistress of Matthew. Replacing Pauline creates a confrontation with Matthew, who makes it very clear that if he and Bobby Gene should, in any way, try to steal Anna Belle from him, they would both suffer the consequences dearly. Pauline, who was once a barmaid, is fired and seeks forgiveness. However, she finds none. Jeffrey and Bobby Gene are put in a life or death situation and Pauline decides to go back to Pennsylvania. Bobby Gene and a few of the other slaves he was able to purchase, with the help of Jeffrey, end up in a battle with Matthew and a few of his overseers demanding the return of his woman and the boy. When she runs out into the courtyard, hoping this would solve everything, she is rejected by Matthew, who has given Travor the demand to kill the bitch! A shot rings out, as Travor lies dead. Anna Bell has been grazed by the gunfire. Matthew regroups, returning guns a blazing, and manages to make his way through all of the gunfire. He finds himself face-to-face with his enemy. Ready to pull the trigger, he lets out an eerie cry and then falls dead with a knife protruding from his back. Anna Bell then runs into the arms of Bobby Gene.
