A hockey puck knocks V Valentine out and into the lap of Sam Almond. This is a turning point in V's life as Sam turns out to be a wonderful and caring boy, and he and V have a long and lasting relationship. But ultimately V is unable to deal with commitment. On the night of graduation she goes off with another boy, leaving Sam devastated. Sam moves to California and V embarks on a road trip to visit her mother in Texas during which she mulls over her relationship with Sam. She realizes what she has lost and changes direction, heading for California...
