The master of the house would have loved to discuss books and authors in depth with Carl, whom he regarded as an educated, well-mannered man, and a kindred spirit. Now that he felt so unprotected himself, with Time and Death gnawing at his every extremity, he wanted security at least for the words that acted as his companions for this brief time.

Auf den vertrauten Pfaden, die er täglich beschreitet, begegnet er der neunjährigen Schascha – die von diesem Moment an eine große Rolle in seinem Alltag spielt.

Die vielen literarischen Referenzen, die wie zarte Fäden durch die Geschichte gesponnen sind, haben mir das Gefühl gegeben, auch unzählige Welten in mir zu tragen – allein, weil ich so viele dieser Werke kannte. 

Eine leise, herzenswarme Geschichte, die mich mit einem Lächeln zurückgelassen hat.

           Carl Kollhoff adalah seorang juru antar buku berusia 72 tahun yang bekerja di Toko Buku Gerbang Kota. Setiap malam, setelah toko tutup dia berjalan kaki melintasi jalan kota untuk mengantarkan buku kepada para pelanggan yang diam-diam dia namai sesuai tokoh dalam buku. Mereka adalah orang-orang yang menyendiri di rumah dan menjadikan Carl sebagai orang terpenting dengan dunia luar.

Suatu hari, Carl bertemu dengan Schascha, seorang gadis sembilan tahun yang bersikeras menemani Carl dalam mengantar buku. Schascha adalah seorang anak yang ceria, keras kepala, dan memiliki rasa ingin tahu yang tinggi. Menariknya tiap-tiap karakter ada pengembangan pada akhir cerita, kecuali Sabine Gruber. Tapi disini pembaca jadi tahu alasan Sabine Gruber rada sinis ke Carl Kollhoff. 

Meskipun buku ini 300 halaman, tapi fontnya cukup besar jadi gak berasa lama ketika baca. Overall kalo kamu cari buku yang heart-warming dan bikin penasaran, buku ini bisa jadi salah satu opsi. Selamat membaca!
