4 Stars - Loved it.

A re-read for me as I never left a review and could not remember full plot. Loved the plot idea with Mafia background but did feel disjointed and not fleshed out but I loved Carter as a hero. Had many swoon worthy actions and words. Emma was not a strong character and sometimes her actions made no sense. She did go through something huge and I tried to understand that if in her shoes I would most likely be a wreck too.

After hearing a lot of hype about Carter Reed I decided to buy into it. I love mafia-related books, so I was really looking forward to finding a favorite in this one. Needless to say, my expectations were very high, and honestly, the story did let me down quite a bit. Maybe my expectations were just a little too high, because I felt the story-line was lacking a few times (with lack of flash-backs, dual POV and something with the lack of chemistry for the characters)and sadly there was just something missing that prevented me from giving this story a higher rating.

The story started out with a bang...literally!!

Emma decides to come home early one night, and what she finds leads to circumstances that will change her life forever...



Emma comes home one night to find her close friend and roommate being brutally raped and beaten by her boyfriend Jeremy Dunvan. Knowing that he is the son of a brutal mafia father, she fears that she has no other choice but to shoot and kill him. Knowing that Jeremy's father will come and seek vengeance for his son, Mallory and Emma know they have no other choice but to go into hiding until they can figure out what to do next.

Everyone fears Carter Reed. Or at least they've all heard of him. He's notorious for being a member of a powerful mob family. He's also earned the nickname the "Cold-Killer". Deemed icy cold and heartless, he is feared by most. The cold killer is not the man that Emma used to know. She knows him as her deceased brothers best friend. As the roughed-up teen who used to practically live with them. She believes she can trust him for she still remembers some of her brothers last words to her..

"You don’t trust anyone, no one except Carter. Go to Carter. He’ll take care of everything. He'll take care of you, Ems. I promise."

But what is Emma supposed to do when her best friends turn their back on her? When she doesn't know who to trust? When it seems like all hope is lost?

As the story continues, Emma is quickly realizing that the she would do anything for her Cold Killer. Her Carter. He is her whole world...and she is his. But are they too late? Will anyone make it out of this alive?

In the end, I was disappointed by  Carter Reed . I loved the potential. I loved the character of Carter Reed, but I felt like the story lacked a certain spark. I didn't feel the chemistry between the H/h and I felt we 100% needed Carter's POV in the story. Great potential, poor delivery. The book did keep me entertained and as the story progressed I had a harder time putting it down.This novel is a stand-alone. 3 out of 5 stars.

Emma had no idea what she was getting herself into that day she returned home early. She wasn't expecting to see her roommate being raped. She sure didn't think she would wind up killing a man or fleeing the apartment she knows, the life she knows, to avoid being killed herself. Her deceased brother's words come to her and she knows she was to go to Carter Reed.

Carter effing Reed. My god. Mobster hitman or not, I want one in my life. He's sexy and dangerous. He's fiercely protective. He's loyal and sweet, underneath that killer exterior. He was Emma's brother's best friend growing up. But their connection goes far deeper than that. It's because of Emma, and his need to protect her, that Carter is who he is today. I pegged Emma as strong from the beginning of the book - you know, when she shot and killed the man raping her best friend. That's not the reaction everyone would have. I really, really liked Emma. I love strong female leads. As protective as Carter was of her, she was just as protective of him and her friends.

Emma and Carter had strong chemistry. It's apparent nearly from the start that their feelings for the other go deeper than lust, however. He's cared about her, looked out for her - unbeknownst to her - for years. She was always attracted to him - how could you NOT be? They ignite when they're together. There were some seriously hot scenes in this book. ::fans self::

This book is filled with damaged, complex characters. Everyone is keeping secrets. The characters in this book are unlike any in books I've read in the past. Each is unique and motivated by something. While we're only ever in Emma's POV, I feel like we learn so very much about each of the supporting characters - the good, the bad and the ugly. I was left wanting more of these characters, this world, this story. Not because there was a cliffhanger, but just because I connected with them so deeply.

  
    "He was all I needed and I was all he needed. This entire experience had changed me, hardened me. I had killed two men. And as Carter continued to thrust inside of me, I knew I would do it again if anyone tried to take him away from me."
  

Carter Reed is just as dark and intense as I expected a book about mafia families to be. It's gritty. Dirty. But that's what I love about it. It's what I love about Tijan's writing in general. She's not afraid to go there. For all the death and dark times in this book, there are just as many sweet and sexy moments. There were tons of twists and turns - some decidedly more unexpected than others. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. These characters and this story aren't something I'll forget anytime soon... and I wouldn't have it any other way.
