what a beautiful book. i sometimes forget how lucky i am to never have to be worried about being queer in a place where i could get arrested for being so. 

i’m not a religious person at all but i had a real connection with some kind of… faith? while reading this. i don’t know if that’s the right word. i just know i’m going to be so deeply thinking about every queer person in the world who managed to exist happily and whole-heartedly in an environment that wanted to kill them for it - who managed to find love and grow old together despite the lack of legalized marriage and having to often hide their true selves. i don’t want to say i feel deeply connected to them, that would be reductive of their lives and struggles - but i will hold them in the forefront of my mind more often than i did before reading this absolute masterpiece of a book. 

i have never balanced so many emotions in my heart before (in the best way possible). if this isn’t clear yet - highly recommend to anyone and everyone who loves queer love.

What a sweet freaking beautiful romance. Deals with anxieties of being queer in the 1950s in the US and choosing to be happy. Loved it so much.

This book is absolutely beautiful and it really truly made me feel like I was getting a warm hug every time I turned the page. What Nick and Andy have is so incredibly beautiful. To share a love like this during a time like the 50s was incredibly risky. They proved what they had was worth the risk. I love this book beyond words.

This is the book equivalent of hot tea and staring out the window from your armchair on a fall afternoon. Everything is lovely, but nothing truly monumental or horrid ever happens. It was sweet & charming despite the kind of clunky stop-start nature of the plot pacing. But while Nick & Andy had their moments, this kind of sweet but detached writing style makes it hard for me to really engage. And there were time where it felt like I'd already read this story a dozen times before (and better). So, cute, but not a keeper.
