I think this book should be introduced in English subjects in Indonesia for kindergarten & elementary school students. This book is so heartwarming, and it brings me back to my childhood, where I used to read "BOBO" magazines. This book has life meaning about surviving for your own life, even though it's hard to be different than anyone else, even though it's always hard because there will always be people who are bothering you, but as time goes by, you'll meet people who could welcome you warmly and make you feel loved. I read that this book has some series, and I'm definitely going to read them all if they are available in my Libby libraries. Plus point: this book has only 40 pages. As a slow reader, I've enjoyed this book so much because it has a short page length and has a lot of picture illustrations that are a feast for your eyes. Please read this book once you have a chance!

Catwings by Ursula K. Le Guin was published in 1988. I didn't hear about it or the rest of the series until I was an adult. But the illustrations by S.D. Schindler make me feel nostalgic for the late 1980s. Around the time the book came out I drew a little cat bird sketch... similar to (but nowhere near as cute) as the catwing kittens.

Catwings opens with a simple statement, one that asks the reader to accept the story as is and not expect much in the way of explanation. It says: "Mrs. Jane Tabby could not explain why all four of her children had wings" (p. 1). I am normally a stickler for the reasons behind things but I am perfectly willing to go with the flow if the author is upfront about saying no explanation will be given.

As the book opens, Mrs. Jane Tabby and her kittens live in a bustling city full of condemned buildings. It's a noisy and dangerous place. As the children grow into cats, Jane encourages her children to find a safe place to live, away from humans who might want to hurt them or keep them as novelties. The rest of the book tells how the siblings searched for a new home and how they found it.

Remember seeing this book as a kid and thinking it looked weird. It was weird! But also funny, a bit scary, and sweet. Read it aloud to my nieces (ages 6 and 8) and they loved it, though that probably has a little less to do with the quality of the book and a little more to do with the fact that they are cat obsessed gremlins.

This book is almost too precious to exist! One day a batch of kittens is born with wings, and they fly off to find a new home away from the city. Cats... with wings! What more do you need? While the prose is simple, it's well-written, as can be expected from Ursula Le Guin, and the illustrations are very detailed and realistic. This is a great book for little kids, but also for adults who want a brief escape into youthful fantasy!
