There is a proper way to grieve in the eyes of others: not too little, not too much. But there is a part of grieving that occurs behind the curtains, a part that is just for us and the deceased. And I suspect it is in this private communion, away from the crowd and the judgement, that we can find solace.

He wondered if you could be both alive and a ghost, if you could be both awake and a wandering soul.

I'll think of all the stories she has told me - stories about the war and friendly ghosts, stories to console and appease me. I'll realise that they were stories she told herself, too, that stories are a bridge between us, and I'll understand that I have uttered a wish she has held on to since long before it came to me.
