Of Flame and Light by Cecy Robson proved to be an enjoyable read. I went into the story with high expectations and the author did not disappoint. Once again, I had a wonderful time visiting the unique world created by Cecy Robson. This is the seventh book in the Weird Girl series and the second book with Taran Wird being the lead character.

Tara the second oldest of the Wird sisters has a lot on her plate. Her relationship with Gemini is on the fritz. Added to that, she was trying to gain control of her magical artificial arm, which has a mind of its own. As a result, she lost control of her magic, ultimately placing those she loves in danger. This was a major problem for her has she hated the lack of control and the impact it had on her family. To address the issue, she reluctantly agreed to train with the witches to get her magic under control. Not an ideal situation, but a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.

Taran is strong willed, confident, and tough talking, but in this installment revealed her vulnerable side. Despite the obstacles faced during her time with the witches, she never once thought of giving up. Her fighting spirit came alive in this installment. She came and conquered self-doubt, heartache, witches and zombies. Through it all her humour, her willingness to help the underdog, and her penchant to speak her mind no matter how crass it may sound remained constant.

Both she and Gemini put me through the ringer. Their failure to communicate their feelings had me on an emotional roller coaster. If it were possible, I would knock some sense into them. Clearly, they loved each other, but their stubborn pride proved a hindrance. They shared some sizzling moments and I wished at each page turn they would get their act together.

This installment provided exciting and intense action scenes, from Taran’s training to the battle against the dark witch and her zombie minions.

Taran experienced several. weird, but hilarious moments during her time with the witches. There was never a dull moment.

I loved how the author resolved the issues highlighted throughout the story, however; she left the door open signalling there was more in store for Taran. I am eager to learn what that will be.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall an entertaining story and one I would recommend to fans of Urban Fantasy.
