Shaker Heights is a tight knit community that seems ideal. There is a plan for everything. Then Mia and her daughter Pearl move in. Mia and Pearl are not the typical residents for the town and bring a different energy to the town that no one was expecting. 

Little Fire Everywhere flips between a number of POVs which allows the story to really focus on each of the characters and their stories. The slow pacing, while it was frustrating for me at times, gave time to break down the characters and really give them life. 

I really didn’t know what to expect from this story, but it was interesting to see all the characters intertwined especially as their views differed greatly. There is a central plot that really ties them all together and then a number of side plots with the characters that really help develop them. 

Overall, this is a strong story. I think for me, since it was so hyped, I did fall a little to the hype which made me not love it as much as I might have been able too.

In the placid, progressive suburb of Shaker Heights everything is meticulously planned, from the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson. Mia Warren, an enigmatic artist and single mother, arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants : all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When the Richardsons' friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs Richardson on opposing sides. Mrs Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family - and Mia's.

This review was originally posted at GonewiththeWords.com The first thing I thought after finishing this audiobook was “These characters are going to stay with me for a while.” I didn’t know what I was getting into when I started listening to this because I hadn’t even read the synopsis, but I know the author was popular and I something about it just called to me. Little Fires Everywhere has so many intriguing things happening at once. It’s one big story with little stories about each character woven throughout… little fires everywhere, indeed. You can totally say that everyone in this story was dealing with their own little fire. Celeste Ng expertly leads us through eacch one to the spectacular end. And Jennifer Lim was the perfect narrator. She completely enhanced the story with her narration. I loved that this book is set in the 90s because it made me nostalgic for my high school years. I highly recommend this emotional story about family and the secrets they keep in a not-so-perfect-after-all neighborhood.

Something which I normally wouldn't choose for myself and was definitely pleasantly surprised. It was a really good exploration of race and class through the fictional town of Shakers Heights.
The whole book was very character focussed and revolved around different perspectives of motherhood and the weight of secrets.
Would consider reading again.

I liked this book much more than Everything I Never Told You. (Not a difficult feat). I'm not a mother (right now) so I can't relate to the mother motif in this book. Of course I have a mother and I can relate as a daughter. I relate to Pearl and Mia's relationship as Pearl but I think that's not the point. I can understand the issues as a woman but not in the motherly way I think many women are relating to this book thus loving it. It touches upon so many different situations that mothers find themselves in, lightly covering the surface of socioeconomic inequities and injustices, but never quite gets deep enough for me. It points out that many are too quick to judge other moms so I get why this is so popular. It's a simple enough story to make even the most basic of women realize that they, too, judge other moms. Perhaps too harshly. I appreciate the Asian representation in this book. That's my favorite thing about Ng being so popular with the (white) masses. I hope regular ol Asian people get to be the main (female) character of one of her mainstream books one day. I do appreciate Ng making the Richardsons absolutely racist in the ways so many Americans are when speaking of Asians. Loved it. That was the one part of the book that I related to the most. Dat ending doe = white people nonsense.

trying to read more contemporary fiction and i did enjoy this one!! i am not immune to mother daughter insanity and small towns in the midwest. i feel that ng could have gone a little deeper into some things but her prose is spectacular and carries you down into this rabbit hole of a late 90s ohio suburb. as a film photography lover i ate up all of the scenes with mias art but do understand it could be a little much if u did not care. anyway 3.5 stars i cannot nail down how i feel overall.

I ate this up. It left me with a hundred questions that I wanted to dissect with someone. It wonderfully hit on themes of inequality - by race, age, income, and gender. Ng is able to depict each of those struggles independently and in connection with eachother. Everyone has a little villain in them in this book and I love that.

i was expecting little more from this book, i wanted to see the whole family realizing what happened instead of just izzy, but i feel bad for the kids, its seems neither of them are happy where they are and it doesn’t seems like the book ends any better than how it started, watching few episodes of the show now, also not used to this writing style

I had been meaning to read this book ever since the TV series was announced, mostly because I’m one of those snobs who needs to read the book first. However, even though I started reading it multiple times I could never go beyond the first 2 chapters. This was not due to the writing, I actually quite enjoyed Ng’s style and so I may give her first book a try sometime this year, but somehow I didn’t quite gel with the flow of the story itself. 

In 2021 I have decided to give the books that I started and didn’t finish another go and the first book that I picked up as part of this project was this one. I pushed through the first 2 chapters and after that it was quite a pleasant read, if not slightly mediocre. The book is often described as a literary thriller and is told in multiple timelines. I ended up enjoying some timelines more than others, particularly the section that described Mia’s past. The main plot, concerning the Richardson and Wright teens, however fell a little flat. I was not invested in it and some of the actions of the younger characters annoyed me. I also would have liked for the book to have a better resolution. While I generally enjoy books with ambiguous endings this one felt a little incomplete to me. 

Having said that, I did enjoy the McCullough / Chow storyline and the topics that it explored like motherhood, cultural identity and the question of whether parents can possibly raise adoptive children of a different race in a manner that is respectful to their birth culture. The detail in which this part of the story was told reflected what I think are Ng’s own experiences as someone with immigrant parents in America. 

While there were things about the book that I liked, I have a feeling in the long run there’s going to be little about the book that will stick with me. Overall, I thought this was a pleasant read but not a particularly memorable one.

I also wasn’t crazy about the ending because I feel like we had a lot left unanswered. do may ling and bebe have a happy life? or are they going to always be on the run from the past much like mia and pearl? what happens to izzy? does she find mia and pearl? does she go back to the richardsons? does mrs richardson finally treat her better? do mia and pearl ever get to actually settle down somewhere and stay there? how does mia’s reunion with her parents go? does pearl like her grandparents? do they like pearl? SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. 

anyway. the story was good. I was just left wanting more.
