MARK DOWN AS: Boys in books who seriously need to pipe the fuck down

UNHINGED incorporates and twists Greek mythology. It's a little bit Hades/Persephone retelling, but it's got big enough changes to not 'really' be one. 

Unhinged follows Spencer Perry (which to me sounds a bit like Persephone and I don't think it's a coincidence) a girl who's boyfriend Micah has recently died but is still hanging around as a ghost. Determined to bring him back to the land of the living as a fully functioning, living human she travels to the underworld in order to strike up a deal with Hades to get Micah back. 

PLEASE NOTE: I was really, really excited to start this book

  LISTEN!
 The stuff I came here for (ie. mythology stuff) was actually really, really well done and I liked it. 

Unhinged adds alot of "twists" to the typical mythology story. For example, the Greeks got heaps of stuff fucking wrong. Hades' is actually called Hadrian, and he's not even related to Zeus or Poseidon at all. Chiron is actually called Charlie. Cerberus is a good pupper. I LOVED the new take on mythology. Mythology has been done and done ALOT (and thoroughly by popular authors like Rick Riordan ) so I feel authors need to give it a new twist to really carry it. And I felt Chani Lynn Feener did that. The twists and changes to the mythology kept this feeling fresh and fun and also meant it wasn't too predictable.

REASONS ME AND THIS BOOK HAD ISSUES

→ It was boring. Nothing happened, and I felt there was way too many reveals and things thrown in at the end and nothing in the middle. LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED !!!! It was just a lot of walking around and touring the underworld and it was boring. It didn't feel like things were moving along, and it also felt like the plot was a bit confused. I wasn't sure what we were actually reading toward, which made it frustrating. I didn't even know we were nearing a climax until it was randomly thrown in my face. Aka, plot structure was a little off. 

→ Was not a huge fan of the characters. I found the main girl, so annoying and whiny. LIKE !!!! Tries to justify her wanting her boyf back with "it's not fair he's dead" smhhh okay good one. Anyway, did not see why everyone was pining over her because she was soo annoying. I did think she was kinda fiery in some parts, and I liked her stubbornness being incorporated as a flaw I just couldn't get into her.

As for Hadrian ........ no. Just no. I didn't find him "swoon worthy" at all. I foujd him creepy. And obsessive. (view spoiler)[ and honestly the way he lied to and manipulated Spencer was abusive imo (hide spoiler)] 

→ WHEN WILL LOVE TRIANGLES BURN IN HELL !!!!  hell, we actually HAD boys telling girls to cheat/dump their boyfriends in favour of them. I hated the love triangle, and I hated how so much of this book was just this girl dealing with so many boys pining over her urgghghghhghghgh I hate that in books so much 

→ Also, insta-love. Insta love AND love triangles you can see why I was bound to not enjoy this. 

→ I thought the villains were weak, and were explained a little poorly. They randomly appeared and got a brief description and that was it. I needed more. 

→ I didn't really understand the ending, which may actually be my fault because I was skim reading but still. URGH. Also, the love triangle survived the story and I want to die

→ This book included the "let me show you how to do this thing" trope which I fucking hate. I cringe everytime. Stop. Letting. People. Teach. Other. People. Things. In. A. Way. Too. Emotionally/Romantically. Charged. Angsty. Way


DESPITE THIS

→ Really, really liked the friendship between Sydney, Quinn and Spencer. Love to see good, strong female friendships. Loved that Sydney was the popular, blonde cheerleader but wasn't mean or a bitch but instead fun and well liked !! super cool !! 

I think this is a book other people may definitely like. I feel the love interest is very up some people's alley (Just not mine) which may make this more bearable. 

Personally I just found it a little bit too boring to get into, and there weren't really any characters I enjoyed or rooted for.

First off, I'd like to start this review off by saying I have never particularly been one to be fascinated by Greek mythology. The entire subject matter has never really gripped at my insides, stimulated my interests, or goaded me to learn more about the different gods and goddesses and how they all intertwined with one another. As a consequence, I went into this book not knowing much about Greek mythology; however,this book explained things really well that you didn't necessarily need a background in Greek mythology to understand what was going on.

Before going into this book, I knew that it was going to be a retelling of Greek mythology, and despite the fact that I knew nothing about the subject matter, that fact didn't deter me from reading the book. The synopsis itself was intriguing enough to the point where I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of this novel when it was officially re-released on Christmas. Right off the bat, Feener delves into Spencer's pain and longing to bring her deceased boyfriend back from the dead, not just a ghost who only slipped into her bedroom when she was present. I felt like the plot's pacing was good. At least for me, it wasn't too fast or too slow. In fact, the plot really started kicking in within the first chapter during that first Greek mythology lesson, of which I had one of those "ah-ha" moments many people experience when reading.

However, this book was definitely without it's flaws, which is why I decided to give it four stars out of five. There were times when I felt absolutely annoyed at the characters, especially Spencer and Micah, and though I get they were supposed to be in love and all, which was the entire basis of the plot, their entire relationship throughout the novel just kind of annoyed me. This was especially evident during the parts where Micah was so busy with his father that he didn't even visit Spencer as much as before, and I for sure at one point thought their relationship was starting to crash and burn and that Micah at some point would decide he didn't want to return from the Underworld after all because of his father. That to me was the biggest reason why I literally started screaming at Spencer in my mind to go with Hadrian instead because it was evident he liked her too. And at one point when Micah expressed jealousy that Spencer and Hadrian were spending so much time together, that also annoyed me, considering the fact that he was rarely ever around anymore to begin with.

Another thing I found in the book, which is more specific, is during the scene where both Sydney and Spencer lock themselves in Spencer's bedroom after being chased by a malicious spirit. Right off the bat, Sydney makes a claim that her phone is dead, and afterwords, Spencer does the same, therefore eliminating their chance to call for help. Later on in the scene, however, Spencer fishes her phone back out of her pocket and locates a flashlight app, which she uses to see around the room after the light bulbs break. However, my question is, how was she able to use the flashlight app on her phone in the first place if her phone was supposedly dead? And if it had somehow miraculously charged itself during the entire scene, then why didn't she use that instant to call for help?

Overall, despite those flaws, I found myself really getting into this book to the point where it was near impossible to put down. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series when it is released.
